As we look forward to this coming year (and another 20 years+), we asked several of our kid experts for their opinions on what our cities will look like in the next 20 years.

Flying cars may finally be something we’ll be planning for in 20 years. Climate change and efforts to address it will intensify. What won’t change is a need to continue to make our cities more livable and accessible for everyone.

Happy holidays from all of us at Interface Studio!

Hallmark we are not but having fun with holiday cards is a recurring theme here at Interface. A smattering of previous holiday tidings. We think the last one still applies.

Planning needs to communicate effectively and let’s face it, most people will not read a big report even if it’s really pretty. Reports have their place but we’re always looking for other ways to get the key messages out there whether it’s through posters, pocket plans, projects newspapers, playing cards, online and/or other formats.

At the tail end of COVID we had the opportunity to work with the City of Memphis and Accelerate Memphis on how to spend a pool of money across 34 identified neighborhood centers. We took it as an opportunity to create an illustrated guide (complete with costs!) of potential improvements from crosswalks to lighting to art. We also developed a process for participatory budgeting to support the City’s outreach around making important decisions. The result is the Public Investment Guide which we learned later was affectionately referred to as the PIG :). We loved the process and outcomes.

A decade in, we embraced an opportunity to shape a once-in-a-generation investment in public parks, rec centers, and libraries across Philly. Grounded in data from day one and designed to drive equitable investments in the neighborhoods that need it most, our work on Rebuild Philadelphia seeded a new specialty advising large urban park systems including Louisville, Baltimore, and Pittsburgh on how to best allocate limited resources and make the case for increased investments in beloved sites critical to city life, health, and sense of community.

We can’t plan without addressing a changing climate. So many places where we work were developed along waterways that experience increasing flooding and sea level rise. In addition, issues of energy, extreme heat and more are constant threads across our design work. This is critical as resilient cities are economically strong cities. Scott and Jamie teach the climate resiliency design studio at Penn, which has tackled climate issues in Rhode Island, the US Virgin Islands and Vermont.

2020 brought about an Interface baby boom - 4 in one year! Our solution to get together on the tail end of lockdowns included an outdoor party. That’s a whole mess of babies on that blanket. We sometimes have little visitors in the office which is always welcome.

Engagement has been a centerpiece to our work since the get go. The engagement needs to be fun to encourage folks to tell their neighbors and friends to get involved. We pioneered quite a few techniques over the years and still love the opportunity to connect with folks.

Downtown Atlanta felt like a homecoming for Scott, our Georgia Tech grad - go Jackets! Our biggest downtown plan at that time with a need to leverage the momentum our friends at Central Atlanta Progress had helped to create. It was Atlanta where we also coined the term “Blah-za.” Like a plaza, but…blah. We have since found and categorized examples of blah-zas in every downtown we have worked. Too many spaces are overlooked and undesigned which accomplishes the exact opposite of a plaza - to bring people together. Our friends at Stoss worked with us to redesign a few key ones in Atlanta and Central Atlanta Progress continues to make impressive progress on all fronts!

GR Forward was the brand created for our downtown and river corridor plan. Along with our friends at Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. creative engagement took center stage. The plan’s comprehensive focus on equity won an International Downtown Association Pinnacle Award. We love seeing the built progress (including a long-requested downtown supermarket) and that DGRI celebrated the anniversary with a cake!

Our downtown planning work began in Macon, GA with the College Hill Corridor in the mid-2000s. We’ve since completed multiple versions of the Macon Action Plan (MAP) including the newest update a few weeks ago. This is a testament to our local partners who get things done! It’s been truly a privilege to watch their progress. Thank you Macon!

Over our 2 decades, we’ve worked in extremely diverse communities where cultures and languages are varied. Engaging and planning in these communities rests on our ability to communicate through drawing. We’ve been excited to work not just in Philly’s Chinatown for years but also with Somali residents in Lewiston (ME) as well as multicultural efforts in Hamtramck, Lynn, Fall River, SE Lancaster, Camden and many more.
