Based on the detailed diagram you provided, here is a short explanation of how a Fire Sprinkler System Riser works:
Summary of Operation
A Fire Sprinkler System Riser (the large vertical black pipe) is the central nerve center for a building's fire suppression system. It manages and monitors the water supply to the sprinklers and triggers vital alarms.
* Continuous Monitoring: The Supply Pressure Gauge constantly monitors the pressure of the incoming water supply, while the Re**rd Chamber Pressure Gauge monitors the system's internal pressure.
* The Check Valve: When a sprinkler head activates due to a fire, the drop in system pressure causes the main Alarm Check Valve (the red central component) to open. This allows water from the supply to flow into the sprinkler system piping to suppress the fire.
* Preventing False Alarms: A small portion of this flowing water enters the Re**rd Chamber, which acts as a surge tank. It fills up only when there is sustained flow, filtering out small, temporary pressure surges that might occur, preventing the alarm from going off accidentally.
* Water Flow Detection: Once the re**rd chamber is full, water activates the Model PCN Pressure Switch. This completes an electrical circuit, sending a signal to the Fire Alarm Control Panel (FACP) and, if equipped, the Mechanical Water Motor Alarm (Gong) to sound the alarm throughout the building.
Essentially, the riser ensures water is ready when needed, reliably detects true fire events, and ensures the proper warnings are activated.
