Leadership isn't just about setting the visionโ€”itโ€™s about modeling the behavior you want others to follow.

Gina London reminds us that the most effective leaders start by looking at what they bring into the room: their energy, their actions, and the example they set for everyone around them.

Would this conversation resonate with your leadership team?

Our job at CreateXChange was to help translate that ambition into the experience.

The right voices. Different perspectives. Speaker preparation. Arrivals and departures. Book signings. Green rooms. Moderator conversations. VIP moments. Stage timing. And all of the little things happening behind the scenes that hopefully no one in the audience ever has to think about.

Because the goal is never simply to put impressive people on a stage.

It is to create a room where the ideas, the audience and the experience all make sense together.

A few things we took away from two very memorable days in Philadelphia.

In this quiet pre-event moment with Cherri Gregg, David was doing what thoughtful speakers do best: listening, testing ideas and getting a feel for the room before the microphones were turned on.

Davidโ€™s work has long explored the forces that hold people togetherโ€”trust, character, belonging, community and our responsibility to one another. Those ideas were especially relevant at ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜—๐˜ณ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜‹๐˜ฆ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฐ๐˜ค๐˜ณ๐˜ข๐˜ค๐˜บ ๐˜š๐˜ถ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฎ๐˜ช๐˜ต, where the conversation was not only about institutions, but about the relationships and shared commitments that make democratic life possible.

What I appreciate about David is that he does not treat big civic questions as abstract. He brings them back to how people live, connect and choose to show up for one another.

This was the conversation before the conversationโ€”and a reminder that the most meaningful moments onstage often begin well before anyone sees them.

Jon Meacham can hold a room with historyโ€”but he also knows exactly when the room needs to laugh.

In this moment, a simple encounter becomes a perfectly timed story, complete with self-deprecating humor, an โ€œexistentially speakingโ€ detour and a very Tennessee punchline.

That is part of what makes Jon such a compelling speaker. He is deeply informed without feeling distant, intellectually rigorous without becoming inaccessible, and funny without ever trying too hard.

For a summit centered on the future of democracy, that balance mattered. The subject was serious. The conversation was consequential. But Jon understood that people stay open to difficult ideas when there is also warmth, humanity and a little room to breathe.

And anyone who can use โ€œexistentiallyโ€ as an adverb and land the joke has my attention.

Who is heard?
Who is protected?
Who feels represented?
And who is still being asked to wait?

Roxane brought the kind of clarity that does not make a complicated subject simpler than it is. Instead, she made the stakes more human.

With Cherri guiding the conversation so thoughtfully, the discussion created space for honesty, nuance and a deeper examination of what a stronger, more inclusive democracy really requires.

That was exactly why Roxaneโ€™s voice belonged in this room.

And yes, after a conversation that serious, I still remembered to get the photo.

Jon Meacham opened the summit at the National Constitution Center with the historical perspective that helps us understand the present more clearly. The following day, Roxane Gay and David Brooks joined Cherri Gregg at the University of Pennsylvania for a thoughtful conversation about citizenship, culture, trust and our shared civic future.

What struck me most was not simply the caliber of the speakers. It was the quality of attention in each room.

People came ready to listen, reflect and engage with ideas that do not have easy answers.

That is what the best gatherings can create: not just a program, but a space where people think differently together.

And behind every meaningful experience is a team doing the detailed, often invisible work required to make it possible.

I was proud to work alongside Lauren Cristella, Cherri Gregg, Vince Stango, Stephanie Rio, Amy Kusen, Dan Bright, Andrew McGinley, Justin Villere, Tanisha Bezue, Heather Bowlan, Violet F., Elizabeth Burdett, MPA and Rachael Garnickโ€”and the broader teams at Committee of Seventy, National Constitution Center and University of Pennsylvania.
