In the midst of the holiday season it is easy to forget that not everyone celebrates Christmas. To the average American, it can feel like the most important thing happening. But inclusive workplaces are purposeful of being aware of other culturally significant events that can be overshadowed by more mainstream ones.
-
Hanukkah- This celebration is significant to Jewish practicing people around the world. The 8 day celebration commemorates rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem and details a story of rising against oppression of the Syrian Empire.
-
Kwanzaa- This 7 day celebration starts on December 26th and focuses on community, family, and culture as a means for African American families to reconnect to their African roots and heritage.
-
Yule- With roots in Germany, and spread to German populations around the world, Yule is marked by setting a huge log on fire and spending the night outside. Many of the classic Christmas traditions we know come from Yule celebrations, such as Christmas trees brought inside.

Why is there such a focus on cultural intelligence lately?
-
The answer- Inclusion.
-
People are finding themselves in increasingly more diverse environments, leading to a need for everyone to be more versed in skills that allow them to effectively engage with those different surroundings.
-
The reality is that while many people of color in the nation are culturally intelligent due to growing up in more diversely populated areas; white Americans are severely behind when it comes to cross-cultural engagement skills.
-
This means that the demographic that holds a vast majority of power is not equipped to effectively understand the minority experience, even as the population continues to become more diverse every day.
-
Growing cultural intelligence is vital to the health and success of every organization and company in the world.

What You Didn’t Know About Rosa Parks

When Rosa Parks is brought up, everyone’s mind automatically jumps to her being arrested for not giving up her seat for a white man in the 50’s. Yet, Rosa Parks made other moves during the civil rights era.

She was a member of the Montgomery chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). She made sure black men were not falsely acccused and potentiall lynched and advocated for black women who were sexually assaulted by white people.

In 1965, U.S. Congressman John Conyers, hired Parks on as his secretary and aide. She remained in this position until she retired in 1988.

She played an active part in helping to organize for the freedom of different political prisoners, people imprisoned because of their political activity, in the U.S.

Rosa Parks' decision to not give up her seat was a monumental act of resistance during the civil rights movement. Yet, she also played a vital role in other ways. Let us recognize her other incredible actions and give her the flowers she deserves!

-
At CE, we encourage our potential partners to ensure leaders are on board with fighting for equity and diversity in the organization. Without it, initiatives can feel disjointed and often ineffective.
