🚨 Artist Spotlight: Nekisha Durrett 🚨

One of the Final Five.

The William H. Gray III Memorial Foundation is proud to introduce Nekisha Durrett one of five outstanding artists selected to develop full proposals for a major new public memorial honoring Congressman Gray at Philadelphia’s historic William H. Gray III 30th Street Amtrak Station.

Nekisha’s concept, titled “Crystal Stair,” is a powerful, 30-foot sculptural column inspired by Langston Hughes’s poem “Mother to Son”—a poem Congressman Gray recited often and credited as formative in his life. In Durrett’s words, the piece seeks to “make a legacy rooted in faith, equity, and service visible and unmistakable in monumental form.”

Inside and out, “Crystal Stair” is a living, breathing tribute—designed not just to honor the past, but to engage future generations. With raw materials and mosaic imagery, it reflects the labor, resilience, and sacred vision at the heart of Gray’s journey—from pulpit to policy, from community to Congress.

This is the first in a series introducing the finalists and their bold visions.

🔗 Learn more about Nekisha and the other finalists and their memorial artistic concepts on the Gray Memorial Foundation’s website: https://lnkd.in/eGidsnwP

🗣️ Share your voice! Public feedback on the finalists’ proposals is open now: https://lnkd.in/eB753S3j

📍 Later in July, all five artists will present their memorial concepts live to invited guests and stakeholders in Philadelphia. The event will be livestreamed—stay tuned for details!

We are postponing the town hall on Wednesday, July 2 at the Kingsessing Library. As you may know, a strike by District Council 33 began last night, which includes more than 9,000 city employees and impacts library staff across the city. As a result, we’re pausing our town halls.

We remain fully committed to hearing from you. As soon as new dates are confirmed, we’ll share the updated schedule and continue our outreach to make sure your voice is heard. We appreciate your understanding and patience, and we’ll keep you posted with new information.

Thank you for standing with us and for helping shape the future of our libraries. We look forward to seeing you soon!

“My main goal in life is to build a good library of Black history—knowledge is a form of Black power and this is my part in it.” - Charles L. Blockson

The ROZ Group celebrates the life of Mr. Charles L. Blockson, who passed on June 14, 2023. He leaves behind the world-renowned Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection at Temple University, one of the most prestigious collections of African American 2D and 3D artifacts in the United States. Blockson donated his collection to Temple in 1984 because of the university’s diverse student body and its location of in the heart of the North Philadelphia’s African American community. Thanks to Blockson, students who study the African diaspora have access to items dating back to 1581. His legacy will play a large role in keeping the world informed about Black excellence. He was a giant of history, an embodiment of love for the community, and made much of our work possible.
