Last two weeks… I’ve been writing, in cafes, I do that as often as I can, including the new cafe at Carpet Company. I’ve been working on an event called Night of a Million Meals, travelling to Philly, PA… Leesburg, VA. I’ve been tailoring specific help to specific situations. Businesses have subtle differnce which require deep understanding.

Owning a business means you don’t have many days when you get to step back and ponder what’s working and what’s not. Im hoping this will be a “calgon, take me away” moment. To get that restful feeling, do the three questions:

Quick backstory of how I came to the Weekly Three Questions. If you know me you know I love a cafe. I owned and operated my own for 18 years and I do still miss making my team and myself an espresso drink for everyone. I miss my customers and relish when I run in to an old customer, and do a catch up. Now, when I am able, and that’s usually on Thursday (def not every Thursday) I do the Three Questions check in. I encourage my clients to do the same.

Want to know what they are? Might as well share them, because they work if you do them.
—What’s one takeaway from this week you should embed deeper into your business?
—Is there one thing you can shed? May mean that you need to retrain staff, it may be a product you love making but it’s no longer serving your business…
—we all want more magic in our world, so use your imagination. If you could wave a magic wand, how would you change it?

Feel free to adopt or call me and we can do a mini session to try this out.

And cred to these fine businesses who I visited in the last month, and took pics of their beautiful espresso drinks:
— delighted to share the latte photo. Hex now serves coffee and a breakfast menu on the weekend
— nice to see your business blooming in a small town in upstate New York.
— thank you for bringing up the restaurant standards in McLean VA
— for a wonderful surprise. Amazing Vietnamese meal in a very small city on Palawan, an island in Philippines.

BOHEME CAFE 2013

Many of you will remember this sweet spot. This is the cafe I ran for 18 years.

Im working on a little video course on Six Pillars of a successful Business. I used some examples from my cafe that illustrate the second pillar beautifully. Financial stability is essential to staying in business (sustaining your business) and is a confidence builder when you fully embrace what you are able to do inside your niche business.

Calling out some wonderful people who have been along for this proverbial ride

TALKING SIX PILLARS

And that’s the topic for today: OPERATIONS. The expression “start with the end in mind” pertains to any pillar. That’s true. The other truth? Can’t happen without the team. It’s the team that makes sure all the little pieces done consistently, like a reflex, like a habit … THAT makes the picture complete.

This is the stuff that grounds the work I’ve been doing in the last 11 years. I am posting a calming coffee and jam tart photo because all this work we do for guests looks like this. A calm, effortless (looking) scene. What happens behind the scene is filled with details and checklists. And it’s why certain people are attracted to this industry, and even more accurately it’s what makes the right person, with the right sensibilities, training, skills and personality to fit the right restaurant team. Hone your operations, then the team is set up for success.

Shout out for a fun vibe, with tasty taquila highballs, shrimp cocktail (retro goodness), chestnut soft serve (what?! It was delicious) and wine from your fabulous and varied wine shelves. On a scale of 1-5 with 5 being the best you are a 4.5

When I started helping business owners eleven years ago it was after 18 years of running my own cafes. My purpose was, and still is, to make running your business less heavy… and that does mean digging into the elements that make your business function.

If this resonates, come join us. We are getting ready for a new chapter here at Marthalucius.com and I, for one, want you to feel the lightness of being!!

Imagine this: a restaurant that opened in 1998 and still feels fresh, relevant, and magnetic.

That kind of longevity doesn’t happen by chance. It takes discipline, reinvention, and leadership.

I created my Six Pillars of a Successful Business method to help restaurant owners and leaders navigate exactly that path — staying profitable and purposeful through the years.

It’s simple, but not easy. It’s a roadmap.

When I see a place like thriving 27 years later, I know they’ve reset and realigned many times — refining their brand, shoring up their finances, tightening operations, and elevating their product again and again.

That’s the first four pillars:
1️⃣ Brand — sharpen your story.
2️⃣ Finance — retrofit the math to sustain growth.
3️⃣ Operations — remove friction so everything flows.
4️⃣ Product — keep quality irresistible.

Then comes:
5️⃣ Distribution — open new paths to sell what you do best.
6️⃣ Hospitality — where every touchpoint with guests reflects all your hard work from pillars 1–5.

When these six align, the business doesn’t just survive — it shines.

Here’s to the restaurants who keep evolving and inspiring us all. 🍽️✨
