You don’t inherit a reputation. You earn the right to carry it.

By the time Jordan and Colter came along, Stout Charolais was already well underway.

They grew up in this operation. Around the cattle, the sale and the buyers who came back year after year. What started as their dad’s life’s work eventually became theirs too.

Jordan has now been back on the ranch full time for around 12 years and Colter for about 3… and these days, much of the day to day operation is in their hands.

And while a lot has changed over the years, they’ve never felt the need to reinvent what has worked for nearly five decades.

Why fix what isn’t broken?

The fundamentals are still the same. Good cows. Functional cattle. Performance that matters. And the understanding that your name and reputation go home with every bull you sell.

But carrying something forward also means making sure it continues to get better.

Jordan and Colter spend countless hours researching genetics, studying pedigrees, bringing new bloodlines into the herd and paying attention to what cattlemen are looking for. They know what works in their cow herd, but they also understand these bulls have to go out and work in someone else’s.

They’ve brought new buyers to Stout Charolais while continuing relationships with families who were buying bulls from Jerry long before Jordan and Colter were the ones answering the phone.

That matters.

Because growth isn’t just selling more bulls. It’s earning a new customer’s trust while never taking a longtime customer’s trust for granted.

And now their own kids are growing up in the middle of it… moving cows, working cattle, spending long days in the windrower and learning the ranch the same way their dads did:

By doing it.

Jerry built the foundation.

Jordan and Colter have taken what he built and continued to study it, strengthen it, grow it and carry it forward without losing sight of what made Stout Charolais successful in the first place.

Nearly five decades later, there’s more reach. New genetics. New customers. New ideas.

But the standard behind the STOUT name hasn’t changed.

THE WOMAN BESIDE IT ALL.

If you know Annie, you know she’s never been one to sit on the sidelines.

On June 1, 1980, Jerry and Annie were married. And from that day forward, Annie has been right there beside him doing what needs done… whether that’s raising a family, feeding a crew, working the garden, milking cows, raking hay, helping with cattle, pulling a calf, or taking care of grandkids.

And chances are good it’s probably more than one of those things.

Annie is a woman of deep faith. She loves fiercely, serves quietly, and takes seriously her God given role as a wife, mother, grandma and helper. Not because she has to, but because caring for her family and serving alongside them is simply who she is.

And for the women who have married into this family, Annie has set quite an example. She’s shown us that being a strong ranch wife doesn’t mean standing behind your husband… it means standing beside him. Working together, filling the gaps, loving your family well, and doing whatever the season asks of you.

Her granddaughters are growing up watching it too. They’re seeing what it looks like to be a woman who is strong in her faith, devoted to her family, willing to work, quick to serve and never afraid to get her hands dirty.

There aren’t many parts of Stout Charolais that Annie hasn’t had a hand in somewhere along the way. She’s fed generations around her table, raised kids who grew up knowing how to work, and now she’s watching grandkids grow up the same way.

Jerry started with a vision for registered Charolais cattle.

For the last 46 years, Annie has been right there beside him helping build the life and family around it.

And today, multiple generations are carrying it forward.

STOUT CHAROLAIS: WHERE IT STARTED.

Nearly 48 years ago, Jerry Stout made the decision to get into registered Charolais cattle… and today he’s still right here, along with his wife Annie, his boys, and his grandkids.

What started with Jerry and a vision for raising good, functional cattle has grown into a program with multiple generations of the Stout family now working side by side.

Over nearly five decades, he’s seen the good years and the hard ones. He’s seen strong markets, tough markets, plenty of long days, and more than one drought year. This year has certainly reminded us of that.

But through it all, the goal has stayed the same: raise good cattle that work.

This February, we’ll hold our 48th Annual Bull Sale.

48 years, a whole lot of lessons, and still building what Jerry once started.

Good bulls start with good cows.

Yesterday we preg checked our Charolais cows… the mamas behind the bulls we’ll raise, develop, and offer on sale day.

A good bull doesn’t just happen. It starts with generations of selecting females that breed back, raise a calf, and consistently do their job year after year.

Pretty exciting to get a look at what’s coming next. And once again.. we had plenty of good help in the pens to get the job done. We sure appreciate our crew!

SHIPPING DAY 2026 🐂

A little earlier than we planned this year but we know God has a plan bigger than ours.

We had a great crew today and some pretty darn good help getting everything gathered, sorted and loaded. So thankful for our family and friends who show up to get it done!

Ranching sure has a way of reminding you that we aren’t the ones in control.

Fighting yet another bale fire today and all you can do is work hard, pray harder, and put your full faith in God. He knows the plan even when we don’t understand it.

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.” Proverbs 3:5

A huge thank you to the Kadoka Fire Department for showing up and helping us out once again. We sure appreciate you guys more than you know.

God is good.. even on the hard days. 🙏🏼

Some bulls leave a mark… and then there are the ones who leave a legacy.

Today we said goodbye to Legendary after over 11 incredible years on the ranch. 🤍

He truly lived up to his name. Year after year, he did exactly what he was bred to do and he did it well. Even in his final breeding season, he settled 95% of the cows he bred… a testament to the kind of fertility, longevity, and dependability every cattleman hopes for.

The good news? His story isn’t over.

We have plenty of semen stored and our pastures are filled with daughters carrying on everything we loved about him. His genetics will continue to impact our program for years to come, producing the kind of calves we’ve come to expect from him.

Thank you, Legendary, for 11 years of faithful service to our ranch. Bulls like you don’t come around often.

You weren’t just a herd bull…

You were a legend.

We want to extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who responded to the grass fire at our place this afternoon. We are incredibly grateful for the quick response from Pennington County 911, Winner Dispatch, the Kadoka Volunteer Fire Department, the Philip Volunteer Fire Department, and the neighbors and community who dropped what they were doing to help. Your willingness to serve and protect our community does not go unnoticed.

Days like today are never easy… but they remind us how blessed we are to live in a community that shows up for one another without hesitation.

While moments like these can be overwhelming, we know this truth never changes: God is still good. His plans are greater than ours, His faithfulness never fails, and even in the hardest seasons, He remains in control.

To God be all the glory, and thank you again to everyone who stood beside us today. We are truly thankful.

HE IS RISEN ✝️

The stone was rolled away.
The grave could not hold Him.
What God promised, He fulfilled.

Out here, life comes in seasons... calving, haying, A.I’ing.
Long days, early mornings… and seasons where the work is happening long before you see the results.

A reminder that God is always working. Even when sometimes it’s hard to see.

Just like Easter.. what looked like the end was only the beginning.

And that same promise still stands today.
