Natural gas is naturally odorless.
The only reason leaks can be detected by smell is because an odorant is added as a safety measure. But that system does not always behave the way people expect.
“Odor fade” can happen in both new and aging pipeline systems, reducing the strength of the warning smell under certain conditions. It is often overlooked when systems are evaluated without considering seasonal changes, flow conditions, and infrastructure variables together.
The key is understanding what causes odor fade and maintaining a proactive monitoring and conditioning program.
✔ It’s not uncommon
✔ It’s not random
✔ And it does not correct itself without attention
With the right approach, it can be identified and managed before it becomes a larger safety concern.
If you are unsure how your system is performing across changing operating conditions, it may be time for a closer evaluation.
