MY 10-YEAR-OLD SON CREATED SMALL WHEELS FOR OUR NEIGHBOR’S UNWELL DOG — THE FOLLOWING DAY, HE ARRIVED AT OUR DOOR AND SAID, "YOU PASSED THE TEST. COME SEE WHAT I HAVE PREPARED FOR YOU."
Although my son, Jeffrey, was just ten, he had an innate talent for working with his hands. He repaired kettles, swapped out lightbulbs, and even crafted a toy crane using popsicle sticks.
Therefore, I wasn’t taken aback when he'd come home each day with grease smudged on his fingers.
"Jeffrey, where have you been?"
"Just outside," he replied softly.
For several days, he kept quiet about his after-school activities. Then one afternoon, I returned home early and spotted him making his way toward Mr. Walter’s garage.
I decided to follow him.
Peering through the half-ajar door, I spotted Jeffrey crouched beside a sick dog while Mr. Walter handed him a screwdriver.
"Be careful," the elderly man advised. "If the wheels are too heavy, Benny won’t be able to move."
In that moment, I understood that my son had been assisting in constructing a wheelchair for an immobile dog.
I quietly returned home, keeping my discovery to myself.
The next day, Jeffrey dashed through our gate with Benny right alongside him.
The little dog was no longer dragging himself along the ground. Instead, he was joyfully rolling on two tiny wheels.
"Mom, look!" Jeffrey exclaimed. "HE CAN MOVE!"
Mr. Walter emerged from his garage, observing Benny as he wiped away tears.
"YOU PASSED THE TEST, Jeffrey," he declared. "Now it’s time for you to see what I prepared for you."
He gestured towards the oak tree in his yard.
We made our way there. The earth beneath it had clearly been disturbed, suggesting that someone had begun digging but then paused.
"Dig there," he urged softly.
Jeffrey picked up the shovel while I knelt beside him, using my hands to remove the wet soil.
Suddenly, his shovel struck something solid.
CLANK.
Jeffrey shouted.
"Mom! There’s something down there!"
My heart raced as I continued to dig, my fingers grasping a cold metal edge.
When I finally freed it, an eerie silence enveloped us.
Mr. Walter offered me a tiny key with shaking hands.
"OPEN IT," he whispered. ⬇️
