For those of you that don't know, I am an avid off-roader. I was taught something by Bill Burke, quite possibly the best off-road driving and vehicle recovery instructor that currently exists: a running vehicle is a happy vehicle. It is true in both off-roading and dealership vehicle photography. Look at how boring these photos are of the 2024 BMW X5's dashboard and expansive display with the vehicle turned off. No one wants to see this. The vehicle should always be on for photos. The engine does not have to be running, especially if in an enclosed space such as an indoor studio, but the vehicle should be on so the dashboard and displays can be seen. Sadly, for this dealership and dealership group they belong to, the majority of their photos are this way.

Stop using these images immediately! All of these are useless! They are not helping! And if it has a phone number; it can cause major problems for your call tracking.

We experimented with these types of images extensively. And we found a very effective version and it is one of our most shared, stolen, recycled, modified, and plagiarized marketing ideas and we don't mind a bit.

But you have to know how to use the correct image type: Never use it as the only image. Never use it as the first image. Never use it more than once in a photo set. Never have a phone number on it.

I always thought it would be a great idea to provide an incentive for customers to bring their trade vehicles in as clean as possible. Freshly detailed? $250 more for your trade. Freshly washed and empty of trash and personal belongings? $100 more for your trade. This incentive would be advertised as an image in every online new and used vehicle presentation. And this way great photos of a clean ready for sale vehicle can be uploaded on day one and that vehicle will sell faster because of it.

I was looking at a car dealership in Florida that is consistently taking 90-100 photos per used car. They have a linear photo display. You have to click left or right to scroll between photos. 100 clicks to get to the last photo. Want to go back to the first photo? 100 clicks. Want to go back to see something in the middle? Start clicking. This is a really bad website design and an absolute excessive number of vehicle photos.

When is the last time you searched for a vehicle online on your own website? How long did it take to find a car and see the entire photo set? How accessible were the photos? How fast did the website load? How many pop ups did you have to close? If you hate using your website, so does everyone else. And if you don't use your own website, neither will anyone else.

One of the photos I believe should be included in every vehicle photo presentation is a realistic view of what the driver sees of the vehicle from the driver seat. And I'm not seeing it online very often. And if I do, I see really horrible zoom outs that make the bottoms of the seats look like they are 3 feet long or close-ups that cut out the driver seat entirely. The doors should all be closed, windows up, seat and steering wheel in line with each other centered within the frame, instrument cluster centered within the steering wheel and minimal to no view out the windshield. Is the correct version of this photo in your online presentation? If not, it should be!
