On national Bring a Kid to Work Day, our West Chester office held its first-ever Chronicle Kids Day.

Rhiannon Flaig, Associate Archaeologist, showed the kids artifacts from Chronicle projects in Pennsylvania and Virginia, including toys over 70 years old. Then the kids colored illustrations on excavation, mapping, and screening, courtesy of the National Park Service.

They also played around with the built environment with magnet tiles and paleontology with some dino friends for a while.

Then they listened in on Chronicle’s monthly company-wide town hall, and showed everyone an example of PPE.

They also went outside and did shoebox archaeology. They even found "artifacts".

“It is meant to teach kids about the law of superposition, stratigraphy, measuring, and archaeologists as storytellers,” said Chris Barton, West Chester Office Principal.

And, of course, there were snacks 😋

Mel Gordon, CEO at Chronicle and Headway Environmental, joined Ben Klink, Office Principal - Headway Southwest, and Tessa Behnke, Senior Wildlife Biologist & Project Manager at Headway, on an aerial survey for nesting golden eagles and other raptors earlier this week.

The survey was conducted on 87,000 acres in Lincoln and Clark counties in Nevada to determine nesting locations in advance of construction of a transmission line. Nesting locations are documented to ensure avoidance by construction activities during the nesting season.

No eagle nests were observed during the survey, but two active red-tailed hawk nests (including the one pictured here) were observed.

Dr. Angela Perri co-authored not one, but two articles on dog domestication that comprise the cover story of the March 26 issue of Nature.

One of the articles details a study conducted by researchers, including Dr. Perri, with the Francis Crick Institute, the University of East Anglia (UEA), and the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology, that reveals that dogs were domesticated more than 14,000 years ago. Until this study, the oldest direct genetic evidence for dogs dated back to just 10,900 years ago.

The other article uses the same genetic analysis to posit that a genetically homogenous dog population was widely distributed across Europe and Anatolia by at least 14,300 years ago. Before this study, the earliest dog remains found in Europe were from 10,900 years ago.

Dr. Perri, Vice President for International at Chronicle Heritage, is one of the world’s foremost experts on human-canine interactions. She has always had an interest in the relationship between humans and canids. Her Ph.D. dissertation and research work since have explored that interest even further.

Drew Buchner and our Memphis office took home First and the People's Choice awards in the 2026 The Society for Historical Archaeology/Advisory Council on Underwater Archaeology photo contest Category B: Color Archaeological Field Work in Progress.

The winning photo, submitted by Erin Stinchcomb, Senior Archaeologist in the Memphis office, shows Buchner "at an arched brick culvert beneath the city of Memphis. Dr. Christopher Barton's recent article on Jamestown, a postbellum Black community in Florence, South Carolina, is now in print 👏 👏 👏

The article, titled Protection, Perseverance, and Power: Landscapes at Jamestown, A Postbellum Black Community in the P*e Dee Region of South Carolina, was published in the International Journal of Historical Archaeology.

According to the abstract, the article "focuses on the confluence of historical struggle, perseverance, and protection manifest in the landscapes of Jamestown."

Dr. Barton is our West Chester Office Principal and a renowned Historical Archaeologist.

In 1870, former captive Ervin James (1815–72) purchased 105 ac (42 ha) from two white landowners to establish his family farm. By 1891, his sons had bought an additional 140 ac (57 ha) where they grew crops, raised livestock, and hunted wildlife in the swamp. At the community’s peak in the 1920s...

Meet Dr. Lillian Azevedo, a dynamic leader whose path to heritage preservation winds through archaeological digs, academic research, and a rural Virginia farm filled with bees, chickens, sheep, a donkey, and one very proud black lab. Yes, she’s that cool — and it’s great fun if you get to see pictures of her amazing farm! 🐝🐑🐔🐾🐴

Lilli is Chronicle Heritage’s Tarboro Office Principal and a powerhouse in cultural resource management across the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic. She brings a rare blend of scientific rigor, calm pragmatism, and people-first leadership that grounds even the most complex projects in clarity and purpose.

With over a decade of experience — including directing large-scale compliance-driven projects across more than 14 states — Lilli is no stranger to solving layered problems with a steady hand. She’s also an academic by training, having earned her Ph.D. in Archaeology from the University of Southampton, and a technical leader who has spent years navigating Section 106, NEPA, and large federal undertakings with confidence.

But what really sets Lilli apart is how she shows up for people.

💬 As Kye Miller, VP of Domestic Operations, puts it:

"Dr. Lilli Azevedo has made an immediate impact at Chronicle Heritage by bringing sharp technical expertise, steady judgment, and a client-first mindset that’s helping fuel our growth across the region. She pairs that excellence with authentic people leadership, creating an environment where our teams feel supported, challenged, and set up for success to do their best work."

Lilli’s leadership style is all about trust, empowerment, and thoughtful communication. She’s the kind of leader who brings structure without rigidity, encourages curiosity, and celebrates the magic that happens when great teams work together. She cares deeply about building a culture where integrity, transparency, and laughter are part of the workflow.

Whether she’s mentoring junior staff, steering multidisciplinary teams, or laying the groundwork for Chronicle’s future in the region, Lilli does it with warmth, insight, and an eye on the long game.

We’re thrilled to have Lilli at the helm in Tarboro — and even more excited about the trail she’s blazing for the region and the field at large!
