With the challenges we’re facing today, leadership strength is needed more than ever. Stay focused, stay in stride and stay in your leadership power! Leaders don’t need to have all of the answers - what they need is vision, authenticity and resilience. Stay safe - be strong!

There’s only two precious things we absolutely own: our dignity and our self respect. When you let others throw you off stride and you get angry or hurt, you are letting people erode these. Stop: hold on to your dignity and self respect and don’t give them up to anyone! Stay strong - stay in your leadership power! Lynn

During a radio show the other day, I was asked if leaders are born or made. My response was “both” - nature and nurture. There are definitely people who are naturally engaging and charismatic (nature); however, to reach their highest level
of leadership effectiveness, they also need to better understand what they do well and what they need to develop or temper (nurture). High performing leaders engage in this work every day.

Hard to believe summer is almost over and in Arizona, school will be starting soon. The discipline that school involves from K-18 and then college promotes growth. Each year students are challenged to learn something new, enhance their knowledge and develop their interpersonal skills/behavior. For some reason, this discipline of learning, challenging and growing shifts when people enter careers. Yes, they are learning something new and their knowledge is growing exponentially in their profession/industry.. And initially there is usually a lot of training and development. It's when leaders are moving up to the senior and C-Suite levels that the real challenges come out. Now, they aren't doing the work - they are managing the work and need to inspire others to reach their highest potential. If team or business performance is not where it needs to be, the opportunity is for the leaders to begin the hard work of challenging themselves as leadership effectiveness, like water, flows downstream.

Women do not need to sit in groups and talk about what women need to do to get ahead. It actually can isolate women further as it sends an incorrect message that women need some special development or that they have special training needs. Senior leaders in a company should be committed to the development and growth of all talent, including women. Until diversity is a core business measurement for the C-Suite, it will remain a project or special initiative versus a key business parameter that is tied into senior leaders' compensation like all other deliverables. Then, and only then, will diversity be a mindset versus an activity.

Conflict is a natural part of life - it's how we handle it that makes the difference. "Be the Dog - not the Tail". That may sound strange, but let's think about it. The Dog position says we're staying in control and not letting others "wag" us or get a reaction. When you're the "Tail", you are letting others determine your reactions and feelings. In life, no one can "make us mad" or "hurt our feelings". We choose our behavior and it's up to us to manage our responses. Be the Dog!

A Senior Executive was just talking to me about the leadership work they've been doing and how it's showing up in all aspects of life - professional and personal. Leadership power and influence is about igniting your strengths, learning what behaviors can derail you and what your "triggers" are. When leaders do this work, they absolutely step into their leadership power. Where are you in your leadership journey?
