Always love contributing to projects and sharing my take on an all-too-familiar subject--LEADERSHIP. What Does that mean NOW...? It's one of the reasons I say "Whenever there exists MANY WAYS to do a THING, there must also exist MANY WAYS to FAIL at that THING!"
Here's my contribution on the latest request, "Michael, What's Your Take on LEADERSHIP and How to Lead CHANGE Effectively?"
LEADERSHIP...How would you TEACH it or COACH it in this current Marketplace. What is the BEST PATH to Leadership NOW?
I've delivered well over a hundred talks, presentations and coaching sessions on LEADERSHIP. Written countless columns and two E books on the subject; The LEADERSHIP IDEA, and LEADERSHIP NOW.
One of the most fascinating books and prevailing MINDSETS I’ve ever come across is from a book called The Leadership Triangle.
There are countless books and messages on LEADERSHIP and for me this one is right there at the TOP.
The great take-away for me was that MANY/MOST Leaders DEFAULT to one of three mindsets/positions when it comes to CHANGE…
1. Tactics
2. Strategies
3. TRANSFORMATION
But the “empirical data” the authors shared in the book which details the amazing story of the transformation of a community, what it was and what it became, pointed to the fact that in 97% of cases Leaders focused on TACTICS and/or STRATEGIES. In ONLY THREE PERCENT of the cases they studied was the focus on TRANSFORMATION!
Not that tactics or strategies wouldn’t be a part of the process, but the FOCUS WAS ON THE TRANSFORMATION! On CHANGING and IMPROVING and ADVANCING.
When I discovered this book and the main takeaway I was amazed how it tied into another of my favorite books on CHANGE, and leading it, from John Kotter.
Kotter has TWO great lists regarding CHANGE and HOW to Lead a TRANSFORMATION. The first list is HOW individuals and organizations and teams GET STUCK in underperforming, WHY FIRMS FAIL. The second list is HOW to CHANGE it.
Here are just a few...
CRITICAL ERRORS:
1. Allowing too much complacency
2. Failing to create a POWERFUL Guiding COALITION
3. Underestimating the POWER of VISION
4. UNDERCOMMUNICATING the VISION/Permitting OBSTACLES (EXCUSES) to BLOCK THE NEW VISION
What's a LEADER to do...? Keys to LEADING EFFECTIVE CHANGE include;
1. Establishing a SENSE OF URGENCY
2. Creating the GUIDING COALITION
3. COMMUNICATING (powerfully) the CHANGE VISION
4. Generating Short Term WINS (creating MOMENTUM)
These are all CRITICAL STEPS and require delivering to the organization, the sales team, leadership team, etc. CRITICAL MESSAGES on LEADING CHANGE.
One of the great rewards from this TRANSFORMATION is seeing the PEOPLE engage and change. Change the FOCUS. Change the MINDSET. Change the ACTIONS. And Change the RESULTS.
Just another reason why I LOVE what I've gotten to do over the past twenty plus years. Delivering these kinds of CRITICAL MESSAGES and being a RESOURCE to the individuals who are LEADING CHANGE NOW!

I was recently asked..."So HOW can Leaders capitalize on what's happening NOW and ACCELERATE their TEAMS' PERFORMANCE and their RESULTS?"
Good question. And asking BETTER QUESTIONS are where all the ANSWERS lie...
In a recent Harvard Business Review on HOW TO LEARN FASTER AND BETTER, they named THE SINGLE MOST IMPORTANT SKILL FOR THE FUTURE...as The ABILITY TO LEARN! And to KEEP UP THE LEARNING CURVE. And DISTANCE or ONLINE learning is here to stay.
As my dear friend Charlie 'Trememdous' Jones would always say to me, "Michael, I don't care what you've LEARNED! What I want to know is what are you LEARNING NOW?"
Over the past decade or so I've been fortunate to do retained consulting work with several client organizations who understood the POWER of creating an online platform for PERSONAL GROWTH and making a commitment to LEARNING and PERSONAL IMPROVEMENT. We've built online communities for employees, selling professionals, leadership teams, and entrepreneurs/business owners and then created or provided content on an ongoing basis to help accelerate the learning curve for these individuals. HOW DID IT WORK?
I remember getting that question from an ownership/leadership team in Dallas, Texas almost a decade ago. "How do you think it will WORK for us?" was their question. A fair one and one I've heard many times, before and since. I can tell you with a great certainty how it will work, I told them. Here it is, THE LAW OF THIRDS!
Meaning simply, executing or implementing any sort of NEW NOW projects will find ONE THIRD of the people asking "Why in the world would they bring that guy in to do this...?" Another THIRD will be mostly unmoved or uncertain or unaffected. But herein lies the MAGIC...ONE THIRD will be ATTRACTED to the NEW NOW! They will RUN AT this new opportunity to learn, to grow, to accelerate, to lead BETTER than before.
So then MY QUESTION becomes "what would happen to YOUR TEAM, YOUR PEOPLE, YOUR ORGANIZATION if suddenly ONE THIRD of them ENGAGED in a new/bigger/better way to do what they do? And when they do this over a period of say 90-120 days they will begin to put a POSITIVE PEER PRESSURE on the other TWO THIRDS. Many of whom probably won't, or shouldn't, be in that position heading into this NEW normal.
I've seen it work in the insurance industry, janitorial, paper, media, mandatory continuing education and more. ACCELERATING results and IDENTIFYING the ONE THIRD that will make a difference in your business and how quickly you can adjust to the changing conditions of this marketplace MATTERS MORE NOW THAN EVER BEFORE.
Simply relying on the "way we've always done it" or the way we WERE doing it won't make it in the NEW NOW. Build a better LEARNING and ADAPTING organization, create a GROWTH mindset, CRUSH the myths of the past, and COACH YOUR ONE THIRD to GREATNESS!
It's worth it.

LEADERSHIP NOW...What is it? What Does it REALLY MEAN?
And most important, What LEADERSHIP FUNDAMENTALS do you/your organization NEED NOW? All CHAMPIONS do the FUNDAMENTALS extremely well.
It's been a decade and a half since I wrote this short book on LEADERSHIP NOW. So many great times sharing Leadership sessions with so many audiences, large and small. There is NO SHORTAGE of information on Leadership. Google can find thousands and thousands of pages, but how DO YOU discover, and transfer to individuals the ideas that your situation calls for NOW?

The LEADERSHIP IDEA I wrote about says this, "Whenever there exists MANY WAYS to do a THING, there must then also exist MANY WAYS to FAIL AT THAT THING!"
At it's CORE, it's about CHANGING individuals BEHAVIOR. IT's not as much STRATEGY or TACTICS as it is about TRANSFORMATION!
And all the talk of MOTIVATION is worthless. Not a SINGLE LEADER can motivate your people to do ANYTHING they don't want to do. At least not for very long. It's about COMMITMENT, and ENGAGEMENT and PASSION. It's about POWERFUL COMMUNICATION (personal conversations) and INCENTIVES and a few other things.
That's what makes for EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP NOW...
