💙 How do you honor the WWII heroes who gave everything so we could live free?

🎖️ On June 6, 1944, Operation Overlord launched the largest amphibious invasion in military history. More than 156,000 Allied troops stormed the beaches of Normandy — and more than 9,000 were killed or wounded that day alone. Historians call it "the beginning of the end" of World War II. 🕊️

🦅 Among them: the 101st Airborne — the "Screaming Eagles" — who parachuted behind enemy lines before dawn to lead the way, and went on to fight in the Battle of the Bulge, the bloodiest battle of the war.

🎵 This tribute was shared by one of the owners of Liberty Auto Center in Fountain Hills — written and performed by Nina Lee, great-granddaughter of Mary, a 100-year-old Scottsdale resident whose husband Andrew served as a Screaming Eagle. The courage of men like Andrew, and the families who waited and prayed for them, is what we must never forget.

Share how you honor these heroes below. These stories deserve to be told. 🙏

Civilian Veteran Champions are special people who make the needs of our nation's military-connected people a priority. Meet one remarkable woman who is doing this in big ways...

Cindy Casaus, Assistant Director at the Arizona Registrar of Contractors, (AZ ROC) was honored as a Civilian Veteran Champion at the third annual Women Who Lead Summit, held May 28 in Tempe.

Casaus, has built one of the most veteran-supportive industry eco-systems in state government. Veterans now make up an estimated 10 to 15 percent of the AZ ROC's workforce.

She also launched AZ ROC's inaugural Veterans Hiring Fair at Phoenix Suns Arena and organizes the annual Construction Science Technology Apprenticeship Fair at Chase Field, connecting veterans and active service members directly with contractors eager to hire them.

The summit, hosted by Women Who Lead Co-founder, Air Force Veteran LtCol (Ret) Kathy Gallowitz, of Vanguard Veteran, LLC. is organized annually by Women Who Lead Co-hosts: Summit Chair Onjalai Brown, Katrina Bailey, Agnes Chau, Kathy Gallowitz and Gina Smith. Now in its third year, the hybrid event brings together women veterans and civilians for a full day of leadership development.

"Receiving the 2026 Civilian Veteran Champion Award is a true honor. Thank you, Kathy and Women Who Lead, for this recognition." Casaus said. "Helping veterans build successful lives after service isn't a solo effort — this belongs to everyone who shows up for our heroes."

The annual Women Who Lead Summit serves as a nationwide platform to expand women’s leadership capacity and cultivate civilian veteran champions.

🧠 Do you know someone who may be silently struggling with PTSD — and aren’t sure what to look for or what to say?

PTSD develops after exposure to traumatic events such as combat, sexual assault, accidents, or natural disasters. According to the VA’s National Center for PTSD, about 8% of the U.S. population will experience PTSD at some point in their lives — and it’s not limited to veterans.

⚠️ Symptoms to recognize (VA & DSM-5):
• Flashbacks or nightmares — reliving the trauma as if it’s happening again
• Avoidance — steering clear of people, places, or situations that trigger memories
• Hypervigilance — constantly on edge, easily startled, unable to sleep
• Emotional withdrawal — numbness, guilt, anger, or loss of interest in life
• Reckless or self-destructive behavior — a lesser-known but formally recognized symptom added to DSM-5

💙 If you suspect someone you care about may be struggling, here’s what the VA and Wounded Warrior Project recommend:

1️⃣ Show up without judgment — you don’t need to have answers. Simply being present and saying “I’m here for you” matters more than you know.
2️⃣ Don’t say “I know how you feel” — everyone’s experience with trauma is unique. Listen more than you speak.
3️⃣ Remind them that seeking help is strength, not weakness — then gently encourage professional support.

Are the Veterans you know thriving? Or just surviving?

The deepest, most profound, and most lasting levels of healing is spiritual healing. Life takes on new meaning when we realize that we are spiritual beings who are here to live fully and grow.

Building a “Military Ministry” helps strengthen Veterans’ get in touch with their spirituality. “Military Ministries” provide practical support (friendship & encouragement) and - in partnership - with clergy promote spiritual resiliency.

Wondering WHAT kinds of things Civilian Veteran Champions do to improve quality of life, workforce and community for those who are or have served in the armed forces?

Meet one amazing Arizonan who supports military-connected people in all three areas

Laura Roman R, of Roman Realty Group, is a Homes for Heroes
Real Estate Affiliate. She has given back more than $250,000 to
military families, expanding access to homeownership, financial
stability, and generational wealth. She also co-leads a $14.5
million campaign to build 50 tiny homes for homeless veterans in
Glendale, with 57% of funds already secured.

As an Honorary Commander at Luke Air Force Base, she and her
husband Mario personally helped prepare and deliver 250 meals
when Airmen faced limited food access.

A mother of a son serving on active duty in the Army, this work is
deeply personal.

“The more time I spend serving the veteran community, the more
convinced I am that veterans don't need heroes,” Roman said.
“They need neighbors. Advocates. Employers. Friends.
Communities willing to stand beside them, the same way they
once stood for all of us.”

The summit, hosted by Women Who Lead Co-founder, Air Force
Veteran LtCol (Ret) Kathy Gallowitz, of Vanguard Veteran, LLC.
is organized annually by Women Who Lead Co-hosts: Summit
Chair Onjalai Brown, MBA, Katrina Bailey, Agnes Chau Chau, Kathy Gallowitz and Gina R. Smith. Now in its third year, the hybrid event brings together women veterans and civilians for a full day of leadership development and cultivation of civilian veteran champions
