As we enter the holiday season, we recognize this is a busy time of year for everyone. With that in mind, the Sonoran Preferred Business Network will be taking a brief hiatus during the month of December to allow our members, guests and followers the space to focus on family, celebrations and year end priorities.

We are excited to resume our monthly meetings beginning in January 2026. Our first gathering of the new year will be held on Wednesday, January 7th at 9:00 AM, at Leila’s Empanadas in Anthem, Arizona. We look forward to starting the year refreshed and ready to continue building a stronger and more supportive business community together.

We wish you all a joyful and successful holiday season. Thank you for your continued support and engagement. We cannot wait to see you in the new year!

💳 Hot Topic: Merchant Fees and Your Rights as a Consumer!

At a recent weekly meeting, Erik gave a powerful presentation on something that affects us all: credit card transaction fees, and how they show up on your receipt or statement.

👉 Did you know that merchants are not allowed to charge more than 3% in credit card processing fees to customers?

👉 And did you know that they are legally required to disclose any surcharges BEFORE you make a purchase?

This falls under part of the Durbin Amendment, originally passed in 2010 as part of the Dodd-Frank Act (we see you, 2003 typo 😉). The amendment was designed to regulate debit card interchange fees and protect consumers from excessive charges.

🧾 Erik also touched on the difference between debit and credit card surcharges:

Merchants can’t impose surcharge fees on debit card transactions (even when run as "credit").

But they can on credit card transactions, as long as they follow strict rules.

📣 Here’s what businesses must do to stay compliant:

Clearly display surcharge notices at the point of entry and point of sale (both in-store and online).

Limit surcharges to the actual cost of processing (not exceeding 3%).

Make sure their payment processor is set up to manage and report surcharges properly.

Erik’s talk was an eye-opener for many of us, especially those of us running small businesses or just curious consumers trying to decode our receipts.
