STORY: Deputies in Cochise County Arizona seized 10,000 rounds of .50 BMG ammo and nearly 20,000 7.62x39 AK-47 rounds being transported.
Officials identified the people in the two vehicles as three asylum seekers, one of whom is from Cuba. The sheriff’s office told the ATF and Homeland Security are now leading the investigation.
With the .50 cal rounds alone valued at $38,500, ATF and Homeland Security are leading the investigation into the high value ammo haul.
The ammunition was seized from two cars that were headed east on I-10 from the Phoenix area.
Authorities are investigating its source and intended destination.
