I only met James Yeager once and it was not all a fancy or some cool moment. It was in passing at SHOT Show many years ago. I had only seen his videos of him doing his thing. - I was in hallway trying to sort my pack and he walked out to the do the same thing. Within a few minutes we had little small talk about the show and chaos of it all. We made some jokes about and we were just two dudes and sharing the insanity of the day. But after he left, He was by himself, big pack, stuff hanging out all over, and a bit winded. You could tell he was working and hustling. I was taken back as he was not what I expected seeing some of his videos. He was a good dude. —— And I’ll always be thankful as he brought us the best training video of all. IYKYK

So here’s a pic of the origins of Big Ugly. (And you can see where he got his nickname). Yeah, it’s actually on film pic on 4x6”. It was 2000 and this was taken at a training exercise with the Sheriffs Office. I was 22, and this was around the first time I fielded my concept of light weight, purpose built vehicle. The concept was completely foreign, and when I described what I wanted to build, everyone just gave me a blank look. So I built and promptly turned everything upside down. It was big and boxy as hell but I could transport 2 teams of 4, a full size stokes basket plus gear, etc. I out ran everything they had went places they didn’t expect a vehicle to go. There was no UTVs, quad cab pick ups, Lightweight Tactical Vehicle was term that wasn’t imagined. I was winging it and proving my crazy ideas by doing it. It was ugly but it worked and in the function, was the beauty.
