Recently, I worked with a motor carrier whose commercial liability policy was cancelled for allegedly operating a truck that wasnât listed on his insurance policy.
The carrier was baffled. He hadnât been operating a truck that wasnât on his policy, and the insurance company initially refused to provide information about the vehicle they claimed he was operating.
After getting the Insurance Commissioner involved, we learned that a Flock camera had captured the tag number and USDOT/MC number on a truck that had previously been leased to the motor carrier.
The lease had since been terminated.
The carrier had documentation showing when the lease ended, but unfortunately, he wasnât given the opportunity to provide it before his policy was cancelled.
So why does this matter to you?
Flock cameras are out there capturing vehicle information, and insurance companies are using that information to help verify the trucks operating under a motor carrierâs authority.
If youâve sold a truck, terminated a lease, or had equipment leave your company, donât assume removing it from your insurance policy is the end of it.
Make sure your USDOT/MC numbers are removed from the truck and keep an eye on your safety data. Is there an inspection, crash, or vehicle showing under your company that shouldnât be there?
Sometimes the first clue that something isnât right is already sitting in your FMCSA record.
