What is workplace strategy?

It turns how your space is used into a plan that works better for the people using it and the business behind it.

At Unisource Solutions, we start by looking at how your current space is being used, then what you already have that can be repurposed. Only then can you build a plan that better supports how your teams collaborate and the business in the short and long term.

How well does your space support the way your teams work?

An ergonomic chair is a good start.

But it can’t compensate for a workplace that makes people twist, reach, squint, search for quiet, or stay in one position all day.

Ergonomics is bigger than a product.

It’s the relationship between the person, the task, the tools, and the environment around them.

That means looking at things like:

• Layout and circulation
• Work surface and monitor height
• Lighting and acoustics
• Access to focus and collaboration spaces
• Adjustability and movement throughout the day

A better chair can improve comfort.

A better workplace supports the whole person.

For National Ergonomics Month, we’re looking beyond the furniture and at the bigger picture of how spaces actually support the people using them.

A project this large tells its story in the numbers.

LAWA Skyview brought together workplace design, furniture, move management, installation, and project coordination at a scale that required every phase to stay connected.

From open workstations and private offices to conference spaces, lobby areas, and outdoor settings, the goal was to create a cohesive workplace while navigating an equally complex transition behind the scenes.

The result is a beautiful new headquarters built to support the people behind one of the world’s busiest airport systems.

From move-out to move-in, every phase had to work together.

September kept us moving through a few very different corners of the design community. A look back at three events we were glad to be part of this month:

🎭 Haunt Couture Reveal Day gave us an early look at what’s coming before the full event takes over in October. Consider this our teaser — more to come soon.

🥂 Emeco House Happy Hour was an easy excuse to step out, catch up with familiar faces, and spend time with the people and brands continuing to shape the design conversation.

☕ IIDA Leader’s Breakfast brought together voices from across the industry for a morning centered on leadership, connection, and the people moving our community forward.

Three events, three very different rooms, and plenty of good conversations along the way.

Your floor plan will change. Can your furniture keep up?

Teams grow. Departments move. Hybrid policies shift. Spaces get reconfigured.

And when the workplace changes, the furniture shouldn’t automatically become waste.

A more circular furniture strategy starts by specifying for a longer lifecycle from Day 1. That means considering whether products can be reconfigured, repaired, refreshed, redeployed, and integrated into future versions of the workplace.

The goal isn’t just to ask, “Does this work for our space today?”

It’s to ask, “How many versions of our workplace could this support?”

Because the longer furniture stays useful, the more value organizations can get from the original investment—and the less unnecessary material ends up being replaced.

Design for the next space, not just this one.

Custom furniture works best when it starts with a very specific question:

What does this space actually need?

For our project with El Dorado Country Club, that answer looked different in every area. And that's why came into the fold.

For this project, a styling cabinet and mirror needed to integrate seamlessly with the existing millwork. Fixed-bench cushions had to fit precisely. Locker room benches needed to support daily use while still feeling aligned with the club’s refined aesthetic.

Four custom pieces. Four different functional challenges. One common goal: create solutions that felt intentional, durable, and completely at home in the space.

Because custom furniture isn’t about making something different just for the sake of it. It’s about solving the problem the space already has.

Gen Z is more comfortable talking about mental health and seeking support than generations before them. But they’re also very aware of what an environment communicates.

A counseling center can offer incredible resources and still create unintended barriers if the space feels overly clinical, exposed, or designed around a single idea of what care should look like.

Today’s campus wellness spaces need to offer more choice: privacy for students who want separation, open seating for those who find proximity comforting, informal areas for drop-in and peer support, and dedicated spaces for virtual care.

Even details like sight lines, acoustics, lighting, and seating arrangements can shape whether seeking support feels approachable or intimidating.

The built environment can’t solve the mental health challenges facing students. But it can help remove one more obstacle between a student and the support they need.

Because the space isn’t separate from the service. It’s part of it.

Attaining a truly connected office is more than just a checklist.

It's whether people can find and book the right space. Whether power and data are convenient. Whether a hybrid meeting actually includes the people who aren't in the room. Whether the furniture supports the team and technology.

None of that shows up on a spec sheet. It shows up in the strategy behind it that determines whether people trust the room enough to stop thinking about it.

Technology, furniture, and space should operate as one experience, not three separate decisions.

Before you assume your office is too big. Think about whether it may just be the wrong mix.

Empty desks. Overbooked focus rooms. Packed collaboration areas. Conference rooms reserved but unused.

These are all signs that your workplace may no longer match how your teams actually work.

Rightsizing starts by looking at utilization, attendance patterns, employee needs, and how different spaces are being used. Then adjusting the workplace around what the data is telling you.

The result: less wasted space, fewer friction points, and a workplace that better supports business priorities.

Before adding, removing, or relocating space, start with the data.

Sustainability doesn’t happen at just one point in a project.

It’s shaped by the decisions made across the entire furniture lifecycle; from what gets specified and installed to how it’s maintained, refreshed, reconfigured, redeployed, and eventually recovered.

When every stage is considered, furniture can stay useful longer, adapt to changing needs, and create less waste along the way.

Sustainability is more than a single decision in the process. It’s a series of better ones.
