It's a cold rainy day here so a good time to talk about artifacts. These are all Samantha Dart Points that were found in the charter Site, a Bison Kill north of Billings, Montana. Note how many of these have a hypodermic like needle tip for piercing the tough hide. One group is entirely Big Horn Chert & Phosphoria.

The Birch Creek Site is a deeply stratified Bison Kill in Meagher County, Montana. It has 8 distinct cultural zones showing continuous use for over 5,200 years. The first four levels are all from the Plains Phase with the top level dating to around 300 years old and the fourth +/- 660 years old. This picture provides a glimpse of projectile points arranged according to the zone (level) they were recovered from. It is interesting to observe the suttle changes of the point type over a period of some three centuries.

Several of the rarer western point types are of special interest to me. I love the cache grade Snaketown & Gatlin types from the southwest. But one of the most intriguing to me are the extremely scarce Stockton points found in the Stockton Delta area of California. Here are a couple of superb examples.

These two Besant Points were excavated from the Muddy Creek Bison Pound Site in Wyoming. The top example is much too thin and small to be used as a dart point and would be considered an miniature Besant. Nearby is the Ruby Site which is an almost identical kill site. At the Ruby Site one miniature examples was also found and Frison suggests that one was a Shaman's offering. At both sites only one example was discovered.

Just got an interesting group of artifacts back from having Ben Stermer paper them. Top two are Columbia Plateau bottom row are all High Plains.
