Our eleventh episode of Earthen Curiosities is out now! It's all about the different modes of fossilization from permineralization all the way to unaltered remains.

We also take a minute to recognize the impending closure of the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The museum opened to the public in 1828 and will be closing its doors on September 30. It is one of the oldest museums in the United States. Leadership from Drexel University and the museum announced the closure this past week. This is a historic and devastating announcement for not only the museum and natural history community, but for all museum-lovers.

Please take a minute to consider supporting this museum by messaging representatives of the university and museum, the PA local government, and PA state government to share your thoughts about this situation.

Also, please consider supporting your local museums and institutions, even just by visiting them regularly or participating in events! Your participation and support means more than you know.

A couple weeks ago, we hosted a virtual story time for the Amsterdam Free Library in New York! We read a couple books about paleontology and archaeology, and had the kids draw what they thought a fossil nimravid, or a saber tooth cat-like creature would look like! We had so much fun!

New class at Aqua & Acre: Rockhounding 101.

This one's for the novice rockhounds — the ones who can't walk past an "interesting pile" without stopping. K&K Paleontology Services LLC (both instructors hold degrees in geology and paleontology) leads a three-part series covering basic geology, rock/mineral/fossil identification and local collecting regulations in the Black Hills. Expect lecture, demonstration and hands-on practice identifying real specimens.

Fridays, 6–8pm, July 17 through 31 at 614 St. Joseph. One ticket covers all three sessions. Ticket includes a rock and mineral identification kit used during class.
