You have to keep "Asking for the Business!"
If you're a Home Service Business like HVAC, Plumbing, Automotive or maybe a Body Shop among others, a very dangerous trend is coming after you and your business. Big Corporate entities are consolidating the marketplace and are after what you have. Your Customers!
If you've noticed your phone has not been ringing as much as normal and your business traffic has slowed, well you're not imagining it, someone else is wooing Your Customers away.
I'll give it to you another way which you may understand a little better. Remember the Cuter Girl in school you always wanted to take out, but couldn't get up the nerve to ask her? Well, because you weren't there on the spot asking her out, someone else was and did date her while you did nothing.
I recently worked with 4 like kind service businesses and learned quite a bit about them. Two of the 4 were independently owned and the other 2 were Big Corporate outfits.
The Big Corp Guys had plenty of work which was driven by constant aggressive advertising. They knew if they were always out there asking for the business, they could keep their trucks on the road and both their Employees & Investors Happy. This is their Business Model.
The Independent Guys were both running their businesses like many did 10 or more years ago. Customers called in, they set an appointment and you serviced the Customer. Then the process repeats itself over and over. You worked off of Incoming Calls driven by mostly referrals. Very little advertising takes place to drive the business other than maybe leaving stickers on the units you serviced. Their businesses go through highs and lows especially around the holidays and vacation time. It was predictable for many years until recently. Now it seems like business gets slower a little earlier before schools out for Spring Break and call volume only gets back to "Normal" a little longer than before. What's going on?
The answer to low call volume and slower periods is easy when you are looking in from the outside. The Big Corp Guys have changed the way the Home Service Business is now operates and it's designed to gobble up market share and Independent Competitors alike. They use fleets of vehicles and Techs to gobble up market share, plus they provide multiple services like HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing and even Vent Cleaning. Their goal is to make as much money as possible for their investors on a hope of selling the business for multiples of what they have invested in it. To do this they have to have ample work to support the working parts of the business. This is why you'll multiple ads for them via Streaming, E-Mail, Text, Cable, Instagram, Facebook and other places. Without incoming calls which lead to Service Appointments the model fails.
So what can the Independent Guys do to survive? The answer is easy, all you need to do is "Ask for the Business!" If you have an ample amount of Service Vehicles and Techs, all you need to do is create work. You need more incoming calls for Service. It's that simple. You have a Sales problem which can be fixed by Advertising and attracting more incoming calls which lead to Service Appointments.
Remember, it's your job to bring the business by keeping the calls coming in. This in turn keeps your Trucks moving and your Techs happy. If you can adapt to a new thinking and mimic the Big Corp Guys, you can increase profitability, gain market share, and keep everyone happy as well.
You may ask what authority I have to speak on this topic. Well, for over 20+ years I ran a successful Service Business and had to learn on the fly how to eliminate the highs and lows of business traffic and to deal with increasing competition. Once I figured out what was happening to my business, I was able to better manage both my workflow and keep my Techs happy along with my Customers. Profitability followed suit.
I hope this helps you situation. If you have any questions, please do not hesitate for more information.
