NEW PHOTOS - 8 year old Kenzie was dumped by her owner because he is moving to a non pet friendly apartment. Kenzie is very upset and needs a new best friend to adopt her. Come get this spayed gal at MACC. I can go home today!
What my friends at ACC say about me:
I lived with children in my previous home.
The staff think I would do best in a home where there are no other cats.
I am finding the shelter a little overwhelming, but when it's just you and me and some peace and quiet you'll see what a love bug I am.
I am looking for a home with a patient person.
I will flourish in a calm environment and a low-traffic home.
I would appreciate slow introductions to new people and places to help me feel safe.
I'm sensitive and shy. I'll need extra help from you.
I would do best in a home without very tiny humans, although I could be open to older human children once I meet them.
I prefer to call the shots and enjoy coming to you when I'm ready for pets.

Hello, my name is Kenzie. My animal id is #155401. I am a desexed female calico cat at the Manhattan Animal Care Center. The shelter thinks I am about 8 years 3 weeks old.
I came into the shelter as a owner surrender on 10/6/2022, with the surrender reason stated as person circumstance- moving.
Kenzie is on the emergency placement list due to behavior. She is not thriving in the care center and continues to display distance-increasing behavior when approached for interactions. She has not warmed up despite staff using treats to build a positive association. Due to their stress levels, it is in his best interest to move out of the kennel environment and into a stable home as quickly as possible. She would do best in a home with adopters who are willing to give him plenty of time and space to adjust, and who have experience with helping a fearful cat adjust to strangers.
Let's get to know each other a bit more...

ENRICHMENT NOTES:: 10/13/22
At front of kennel sitting up, steps back when reaching close to offer treats on scratcher tool. She climbs on top of the den to avoid attention and swats at the tool when reaching close. She stares and then climbs down to hide into the den. Not interested in attention.
10/15/22
Pokes head out of den door, retreats as the kennel door is opened, brings nose to vent holes to sniff, sniffs scratcher tool, eats treats placed through holes and then sits up and begins stress meowing, so elected not to turn den sideways and left catnip.
10/17/22
On to of den, appears tense, begins stress meowing as I approach to do a nose sniff with the scratcher too and hisses and makes as if to swat. But almost comes down to investigate catnip so i used the scratcher tool to put some on top of the den causing her to swat again, but after I closed the door she did come down!
10/18/22
Not happy today. Crouched down hiding in den, focused on me through vent holes with tense body and wide eyes. When dropping treats in the vent hole, she punches the den, hisses, and whines. When reaching close to the den side entrance with treats on the scratcher tool, she growls and swats the tool hard. Not interested in attention or interaction.
10/19/22
Resting on her cage bedding with head high. Alert with soft eyes. She soft meows when spoken softly to. Seems to be under the weather but hisses and sat upright when moving close with the scratcher tool for pets. She then swatted at the tool avoiding contact. Ate offered treats that was left by the front of the kennel when left alone.
10/20/22
Sitting up at front of kennel, tenses up, steps back, and hisses when spoken to and opening the door. When reaching close to offer treats on the scratcher tool, she retreats into the den to hide. When offered treats through the vent holes, she hisses and swats at the den. Not interested in attention.
10/27/22
Crouched down at front of kennel, hisses and steps back when spoken to and opening the door. Accepts treats offered, swats tool and hisses when reaching to pet. When stroking body, she retreats to the side kennel. Kept interaction short to reduce stress. Not interested in attention.
ACTIVITY LEVEL:: Subdued
VOCAL:: Quiet
CHARACTER TYPE: : Bold,Independent,Shy ,Timid
POTENTIAL CHALLENGES:: Fearful,New home adjustment period
BEHAVIOR DETERMINATION: : Level 4
RECOMMENDATIONS:: No young children
BEHAVIOR SUMMARY:: Kenzie is a bold, shy, and independent cat. She was crouched down on top of the den with her head and ears forward, focused on the assessor with a tense body and wide eyes. When reaching close to open the door, she quickly swats at the door and hisses. When spoken to and offering treats on the scratcher tool, she begins to growl and then pauses to sniff the treat and tool placed in front of her. The assessor reaches close to pet and Kenzie leans back and then climbs down next to the den entrance. When pet on the body, she hisses and swats the tool, then retreats into the den to hide. Pick up was not attempted in order to reduce stress.
Kenzie is not open to interaction at this time and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. Because her previous owner reports she is affectionate, playful, and confident but also independent and quiet cat in a home environment, we believe the behavior seen in the care center is shelter-specific and this cat would make a great pet, but is really struggling in the shelter environment. This cat is suitable for adopters with previous cat experience who are willing to work with a cat who needs time and patience to help her adjust to the new home. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we feel that this cat will do best in an experienced home with adopters who are willing to work with a cat who needs time and patience to help her adjust to the new home.
