Fox-fire Taxidermy

Fox-fire Taxidermy Fox-fire Taxidermy is a full-time shop in Central NC. I do what I describe as "careful taxidermy".

About prices..... Prices vary widely from one shop to another and the quality of the product can be very different as well. My goal is to give my clients good solid mounts that they can be proud of, using high quality materials. My prices generally run a bit more than many others but I put lots of hours into a mount in my effort to please, and I do not use the cheapest materials. My prices are sub

ject to change so I do not list them here but will happily quote prices by email or by phone. For fastest communication phone me at 919-545-0338 or email at [email protected]

It's always a good idea to phone ahead as I sometimes am pulled away from the shop during normal hours but drop-in visits are fine.

I am a skull lover, been that way since I was a kid. I clean skulls and getting a very good result doing skulls takes more work than most people would realize. Alligators are the most challenging skulls that I have worked with since they come all apart during the process. Many skulls come apart some but the gators are the worst for that - in my experience.

Some foxes. People often confuse a gray fox for a red fox because of the red neck/shoulder area on a gray fox but compared to a true red fox the difference is obvious.

I've done this type of work for a few people over the years. If you are not a Carolina fan it surely will not work for you but for those that are it might just be the thing.

I'm sort of into odd colored critters. This orange racc**n was taken by a c**n hunter a few years ago. I tried to talk him out of it but there was no getting this one from him. I have a plan for a multi racc**n mount but I'm still missing an orange racc**n.

Coyotes have become a larger part of taxidermy over recent years. It used to be an occasional thing for someone to shoot a coyote but now with a stronger population many are taken. I like working with coyotes and the many colors that we see now just makes it more interesting to me.

It was some years ago.... a client brought in a bobcat and asked me to hold it until turkey season when he planned to get a bird to do a large mount he had in mind. I remember him saying he would shoot a Jake since they aren't quite as large. Turned out he killed the biggest gobbler he ever had gotten so decided to use him. He wanted the mount to have some question.... would the cat catch the turkey or would the turkey get away? I made a mold and then a cast of the actual cat's body and I even made a bird's nest to go in the small tree next to the bobcat...(hard to see in this picture). Mounts like this one take a lot of time but I did like the challenge.

Looking back at some old photos of some of my taxidermy work I came across this. It is among some of my favorite projects that I ever have done. The bass is a skin mount and the frog is a replica. My client had the basic idea of what he wanted but left the overall design up to me. I liked it then and I still like how it came together.

I've been a sort of a skull guy most of my life. I have been a hunter more than 50 years of my life. In 2008 I killed a doe with my bow that I had hunted the previous year without success. I had seen her and even had her close enough to take with my arrow but with thick cover I chose to let her walk. Later I could have shot her with my muzzle loader but decided to wait and hunt her again with my bow. That next year I got her at about 18 yards. This doe was obviously very old which is what had caused me to hunt her. I sent two teeth off to deerage.com and they aged her at 12.5 years old.....the oldest deer that I have ever taken as far as I know. Look at the excessive tooth wear and the missing teeth. She was getting to the place where processing food would be a big challenge. For me she was a special "get" and still stands out in my memory as one of my favorite hunts.

I wanted something different for my own turkeys of this season- something rustic. I had an old board from our old barn after I rebuilt it a couple of years ago, I think it works..... works for me anyway.
