Farm School Farm School is a Pittsburgh nature based early childhood education program. Our main focus is social and emotional learning. Through keen observation.

We do not currently have children's school year program options. Heather Kirk Shannon combined her love of naure with teaching young children to create Farm School, cultivating young hearts and minds. Her mission is to support young humans learning how to be human with other humans. She practices deep listening to the children she works with, not only listening to children's words, but to their em

otions and body language as well. Her patience and careful use of language provide safety and guidance to support children through challenging peer interactions and big feelings. Animal and plant care, tree and plant identification, and outdoor exploration in all seasons and weather support the natural pace of learning in early childhood. At this time, we only have summer program offerings. Heather has served as a Parent Mentor for 18 years with a local agency and now offers private and group parent learning and support sessions. modeling language and techniques, she offers parents more tools for their parenting toolbox. Heather has worked in Early Childhood Education for over 25 years in a variety of settings. She is passionate about quality experiences for young children and the adults who work with them. Heather has accumulated a wealth of knowledge over the years and is proud to offer consultations and support for established in home child cares and schools as well as newly developing programs. Farm School started with 2 families attending 2 days a week. I am forever grateful to the families that took a chance and enrolled. Megan Kirk Shope enrolled 2 of her children that year.
I am proud to say that Owen was one of the children in attendance that very first farm school year and helped to shape the program. He has continued a love and appreciation of the outdoors. He is now 17 years old and has a learning opportunity in Alaska and could use some community support to get there.

The Legend of the P***y Willow

According to an old Polish legend, many springtimes ago a mother cat was crying at the bank of the river in which her kittens were drowning. The willows at the river’s edge longed to help her, so they swept their long graceful branches into the waters to rescue the tiny kittens who had fallen into the river while chasing butterflies. The kittens gripped on tightly to their branches and were safely brought to shore. Each springtime since, goes the legend, the willow branches sprout tiny fur-like buds at their tips where the tiny kittens once clung.
