Think Big. Shop Small. This year, if you’re privileged enough to have some financial security and a choice of where to spend your money, I am once again urging you to think of the Big Picture when you shop for the holidays.
The Big Picture is that when you shop at a small local store you’re keeping money in your community and helping your neighbors. When you shop at a corporate store or online at mega-retailers, you’re putting even more money back into the pockets of billionaires.
I know in 2024 we can’t avoid spending money giant corporations, and for many it’s simply a financial necessity. First & foremost you have to do whatever you can to keep yourself safe, warm, and fed. But for those purchases where you CAN make a choice, I’m urging, scratch that, I’m BEGGING you to find a shop in your community, or an independent retailer or artist online. Head to your local holiday market or vintage store or ask your friends for suggestions. Wherever you live, there are local businesses struggling and they need your help now more than ever.
This weekend when you head out into the wasteland of “deals” that aren’t really savings, just ways for more corporations to make more billions while serving you more ads and selling you less for more money, think of that local artist you saw earlier this year or that store you’ve always liked but haven’t been to in a while. Think about where you spend your money in the big picture of things. Think Big. And Shop Small.
