Cybergenetics Cybergenetics TrueAllele® technology interprets DNA data from crime scene evidence. Cybergenetics was founded in 1994.

The initial focus was genetics, using computers to automate the interpretation of DNA data for medical diagnosis and gene discovery. Five years later, the company transitioned into forensic analysis, helping to eliminate backlogs and solving the DNA mixture problem. ment led to routine use in most of the United States and abroad. Dozens of empirical studies form the basis of TrueAllele’s acceptance as reliable science. In a 2009 conviction, TrueAllele identified a murderer through his victim’s fingernails. In a 2016 exoneration, TrueAllele helped free an innocent man after twenty four years in prison. In hundreds of criminal cases, attorneys and investigators use Cybergenetics "probabilistic" genotyping to find truth in DNA.

Today at the MOCIC conference, a Cybergenetics analyst will present the case of State of Wisconsin v. David Kahl, a cold case involving the 2008 murder of University of Wisconsin–Madison student Brittany Zimmermann.

DNA recovered from Zimmermann’s clothing produced complex mixtures that were inconclusive through manual interpretation because of low DNA amounts and multiple contributors. TrueAllele® analyzed the same data and produced match statistics supporting an association with Kahl.

Kahl later pleaded guilty to first-degree homicide and was sentenced to life without parole.

At the MOCIC Annual Conference this week, we’re highlighting how DNA can help investigators uncover connections across cases.

Even a complex DNA mixture from related people can be interpreted with TrueAllele®.

In 2009, five members of the Lin family were murdered in their New South Wales home.
Investigators later found a brown stain on the garage floor at Robert Xie’s home. The stain contained DNA from at least three related people. Because family members share DNA, mixtures like this can be especially difficult to separate and interpret. So the lab sent Cybergenetics the same data from the complex mixture for advanced TrueAllele analysis.

For TrueAllele, related contributors are not a problem. The system was able to separate the complex family mixture and produce inclusionary match statistics for all five victims.

After two mistrials and a hung jury, Xie was convicted in a fourth trial and received five consecutive life sentences without parole.

As we near the end of the CHIA Conference, we’re highlighting a California case where TrueAllele® helped interpret complex DNA evidence across crime scenes.

In 2013, three women were sexually assaulted by a masked assailant in East Bakersfield. During one assault, the attacker took the household’s cellphones—but mistook a little girl’s Disney Princess phone for a toy. She called police, causing him to flee and drop a zip tie believed to have been used to bind a victim.

Investigators collected DNA from the zip tie and other evidence. Many mixtures were too complex for traditional human review. TrueAllele produced match statistics from 33 items, with eight linking Billy Ray Johnson to the three crimes.

Johnson was convicted on 24 charges and sentenced to life without parole, plus 423 years to life.

While attending the California Homicide Investigators Association (CHIA) Annual Conference, we’re highlighting a California case where TrueAllele® helped uncover important DNA evidence.

Following an attempted home robbery, investigators recovered a tan glove containing a complex DNA mixture. Cybergenetics analyzed the electronic DNA data and found strong statistical support linking both defendant Tokunbo Okuwoga and an accomplice to the glove.

A Cybergenetics DNA analyst testified about the TrueAllele findings before a Kern County jury. Okuwoga was found guilty on all counts, including robbery, burglary, and three counts of murder, and was sentenced to life in prison without parole.

Continuing our Louisiana case spotlight during the International Homicide Investigators Association Annual Conference in New Orleans, we're highlighting another case involving challenging DNA evidence.

After a man was found beaten to death, investigators recovered a bleach bottle from the scene containing DNA mixture evidence.

Cybergenetics analyzed the DNA data using TrueAllele®, producing a strong statistical result associated with the defendant. A Cybergenetics analyst later testified about the DNA findings at trial.

Today, the Louisiana State Police Crime Laboratory uses TrueAllele in-house to help interpret complex DNA evidence. This case is one example of how probabilistic genotyping can provide investigators and laboratories with additional information from challenging DNA mixtures.

As the International Homicide Investigators Association (IHIA) Annual Conference comes to Louisiana, we are highlighting a case where the Louisiana State Police Crime Laboratory, which utilizes TrueAllele® in-house, interpreted complex DNA evidence.

After a violent home invasion, one victim survived approximately 24 stab wounds, while another reported being sexually assaulted. Investigators recovered a bow release containing a complex three-person DNA mixture.

TrueAllele separated the mixture and provided strong statistical support linking both the victim and suspect James Tabb to the evidence. After a Daubert hearing, the court admitted the results, and a jury unanimously convicted Tabb. He received a minimum sentence of 114 years.
