UNPOPULAR OPINION: Just because you want something made doesn't mean a business is obligated to make it.
And apparently, some people need to hear that.
Today, we had a customer approach us about reproducing custom artwork featuring protected branding.
Rather than blindly taking the money, we did what any responsible business should do. We looked into the design, contacted the brand directly, and confirmed that authorization had NOT been granted for its reproduction.
So we politely declined the job.
Professional response. Clear explanation. No attitude. No drama.
The customer's response?
"F--k you, I want what I want."
Well, congratulations. You still aren't getting it from us. π€·ββοΈ
Here's something I wish more people understood about the custom apparel, embroidery, printing, engraving, and maker industries:
**WE ARE BUSINESS OWNERS. NOT COPYRIGHT VENDING MACHINES.**
Having a picture saved on your phone doesn't mean you own the artwork.
Finding a logo on Google doesn't give you permission to reproduce it.
Paying someone to make something you want doesn't magically eliminate trademark protections.
And throwing a tantrum when a business tells you no certainly isn't going to change any of that.
We have invested an incredible amount of time, money, equipment, and effort into building Forge & Thread Supply Company. We're not jeopardizing our reputation, our business, or our professional relationships because somebody believes their wants outweigh someone else's intellectual property rights.
And to my fellow makers and small business owners:
STOP BEING AFRAID TO SAY NO.
Not every dollar is worth earning.
Not every customer is worth keeping.
And not every project deserves a place on your production schedule.
You can provide outstanding customer service without compromising your standards. You can be professional without being a pushover. And you can turn down a job without owing someone an argument.
We love creating. We love bringing ideas to life. We love helping customers turn their visions into something tangible.
But we will not knowingly reproduce protected artwork without proper authorization. Period.
If that costs us a sale, so be it.
Our integrity isn't for sale.
π₯ MAKERS, PRINTERS, EMBROIDERERS, ENGRAVERS, AND SMALL BUSINESS OWNERS:
Have you ever had someone get downright nasty because you refused to reproduce something you didn't have permission to use?
I want to hear your stories in the comments.
And if you believe protecting your business and respecting intellectual property should be the standard rather than the exception, SHARE THIS PUBLICLY.
There are thousands of makers out there who need to know it's perfectly acceptable to tell a customer NO.
A customer's money doesn't buy the right to compromise your integrity.
