Another (boring, logistical) update from Tape It Up Reproductions founder, C.J. Malm:
This Monday marks 8 years since I first launched this page - marking my first foray into sole proprietorship. That is, the first time I took it seriously enough to register my business name, get a Tax ID and a business bank account... big people stuff like that 😊
At that time, Tape It Up was meant to be my entrepreneurial focus -- digitizing analog media and enhancing it for the best possible playback quality. In time, I was able to use the brand for some semi-pro audio production and marketing work, while helping my brother Cory Malm get started as a professional musician. That, along with my experience as a DJ and event host, led me to launch Party It Up Pittsburgh as an offshoot project, 5 years ago this month. And despite the pandemic stunting the project's growth in its infancy, Party It Up has rapidly become the most successful solo business venture that I've ever embarked on.
At the same time, Tape It Up is quickly being scaled down. It's become clear that most people don't need or want significant enhancements to their transferred media - and the touch-ups that took hours of manual labor in 2016 can now be done with AI filters and simple editing software. Not to mention, it's becoming more difficult and costly to maintain tape playback gear, which is no longer being manufactured; and the tapes themselves are rapidly deteriorating, wearing more heavily than ever on the aging machines. This makes the business lean more towards the "labor" aspect in the phrase, "labor of love."
I long contemplated a formal sunset of Tape It Up... but restoring these priceless home recordings remains a passion of mine, and many people still reach out to me as an individual that they can trust with their irreplaceable tapes, films, photos, etc.
So, I've made the following two decisions, which I'll be rolling out through the end of 2024:
1) "Tape It Up Reproductions," as a service, will be rebranded to "Tape It Up Transfers," effective immediately. Operations will continue much as they were described in my post from late 2023.
2) "Tape It Up Reproductions" will be retired as my 'fictitious name,' meaning that phrase will no longer represent the overarching business that represents what I offer as a media & entertainment professional. Both Tape It Up Transfers and Party It Up Pittsburgh will remain operative as "service divisions" of the new business -- whose name I will announce once I have it formalized. ( I think most of you will be VERY familiar with this new name! 😉 )
This process involves a lot of formalities for legal / tax / banking purposes ... so bear with me as I trudge through those ever-so-fun waters.
Thank you all, from the bottom of my heart, whether you've trusted me with your amazing projects ... been patient as I struggle with an exhausting work / life balance ... or just simply followed the page. Each of these is a level of support that I deeply appreciate.
Oh -- and don't worry. A new business name doesn't mean a new page to follow. Your notifications are safe from me ... THIS time! 😁
