BABICHacoustics completed an acoustical evaluation of a black box theater in Waller Hall at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. Used for plays, operas, and musicals, the space was experiencing strong sound reflections that impacted clarity. The goal of this project was to enhance the listening experience for both performers and audiences alike.

Meeting code doesn’t always mean meeting expectations.

For walls and floors between dwelling units, the International Building Code requires an STC of 50 in laboratory testing or 45 when measured in the field. But those numbers represent minimum requirements.

The appropriate sound isolation target depends on how a space will actually be used. A condominium, medical exam room or residence located above a restaurant may require a very different level of acoustic performance.

Q: Does glass create acoustic problems?

A: It can. Glass is a highly reflective surface, so spaces with large windows or glass walls may experience increased sound reflections and reverberation. That doesn’t mean glass and good acoustics are incompatible. Acoustical strategies can be incorporated elsewhere in the design to balance reflective surfaces while maintaining the architect’s visual intent.

BABICHacoustics worked with PWWG Architects and Koning Eizenberg Architecture on the renovation of the historic Carnegie Library, built in 1890, into MuseumLab, an innovative space where kids ages 10+ can explore art, technology and making. This project won a prestigious Dezeen award for civic and cultural interiors in 2020.

We were proud to help transform this historic Pittsburgh landmark into a creative learning environment for a new generation.

This week we welcomed Angelo Boni, a high school senior in Western Pennsylvania interested in engineering. He spent one morning completing a job shadow requirement for his school. We showed him how to take noise & vibration measurements and read architectural drawings; we discussed the different aspects of acoustical consulting; and we introduced him to other engineering disciplines. It is fantastic that the school is requiring its students to explore their career options! This is one of the missions of the National Council of Acoustical Consultants, and we are glad we could contribute to this outreach.

Two walls can have the same STC rating and perform very differently.

One reason? STC does not account for low-frequency noise, including sound from subwoofers and rooftop equipment. That means a strong laboratory STC rating may not fully address the noise that occupants hear.

The noise source, building construction, potential flanking paths, and expectations for the space need to be considered in addition to the rating.

BABICHacoustics completed acoustical analyses for Hotel Monaco in downtown Pittsburgh, including a survey of The Commoner restaurant to improve acoustical comfort.

What does an STC rating tell you?

Sound Transmission Class, or STC, is commonly used to describe how well a wall or floor-ceiling assembly reduces airborne sounds such as voices, television, and music.

But the number alone doesn’t tell the whole story.

Construction details, penetrations, flanking paths, and even the type of noise can affect how an assembly performs once it is built.
