FUN FRIDAY: Who’s Steering the Ship?

Running a business is a lot like navigating a ship. You’re setting the destination, guiding your crew, and keeping everything moving in the right direction. But who’s helping manage the behind-the-scenes responsibilities?

When you partner with a Professional Employer Organization (PEO), understanding who handles what is key to a smooth voyage!

The Employer Steers: You lead daily operations, make business decisions, manage your team, and direct the work your employees do.

The PEO Helps Navigate: Depending on your agreement, your PEO can assist with payroll, HR administration, benefits administration, and employment-related compliance support.

The Best Voyages Take Teamwork: A PEO partnership doesn't mean handing over the wheel. It means having support to help navigate the HR responsibilities that come with running a business.

At Corporate Outsource Solutions, we're here to help you chart your next course, understand your responsibilities, and keep your business moving forward.

This Friday's question: Are you steering the ship alone, or do you have the right crew on board?

Business Is Changing. Has your HR kept up?

Growth is exciting, but it also brings new challenges. More employees mean more questions, more paperwork, more complex HR responsibilities, and more time spent managing the details behind the scenes.

When you're busy hiring, handling payroll, managing benefits, and keeping up with employment requirements, it's easy to lose sight of the business you're working so hard to grow.

The good news? You don't have to do it all yourself.

A PEO can help small businesses access HR support, streamline employee administration, and navigate the challenges that come with growth—without necessarily needing to build a full in-house HR department.

At Corporate Outsource Solutions, we're here to help you find a better way forward, so you can spend less time managing the back office and more time leading your business.

Your business has grown. Let's make sure your support grows with it.

Are Your Employee Benefits Competitive?

As we head into Q4, now is the time to review your health benefits, retirement offerings, and overall employee experience.

Rising healthcare costs, confusing benefits, and limited employee support can affect your budget, satisfaction, and retention. A year-end review helps identify gaps, plan for renewals, and prepare for the year ahead.

At Corporate Outsource Solutions, we help businesses navigate HR, payroll, and benefits administration so you can spend less time managing the details and more time supporting your team.

Better planning today. A stronger workforce tomorrow.

Finding a great teacher is one challenge.
Keeping a great teacher is another.

When an experienced teacher leaves, an organization doesn't simply lose an employee. It loses experience, relationships, institutional knowledge and someone who understands the students and the culture of the organization.

The National Center for Education Statistics found that among public school teachers who moved schools voluntarily between the 2020–21 and 2021–22 school years, 31% identified school factors as the most important reason for their move. Salary and other job benefits were identified as the most important reason by 9%.

That finding is important because retention is not only about salary.

The Institute of Education Sciences notes that working conditions are among the strongest predictors of whether teachers stay or leave. Leadership, support, resources, communication and the day-to-day environment all matter.
Benefits are part of that larger picture.

So ask:
Are employees supported when they have questions?
Do they understand their benefits?
Are managers equipped to handle employee issues?
Are policies clear?
Is payroll reliable?
Are retirement and health benefits competitive?
Does the organization show its employees that their work matters?

Teachers spend their careers investing in other people.

They invest their time, knowledge, patience and energy into helping students learn, grow and prepare for the future. Sometimes that investment even comes out of their own pockets.

But what happens when we look at the people doing that work?

Supporting teachers is about more than salary. Health insurance, retirement, family support, professional development, HR support and the overall workplace experience all play a role in how employees view their organization — and whether they see themselves staying.

For education organizations, taking a closer look at the employee experience can uncover opportunities to better support the people who support students every day.

Because retaining great teachers isn't just about what they earn. It's about how valued, supported and prepared they feel for their own future.

Teachers teach the future. Let's make sure we're investing in theirs.

When an organization evaluates what it offers its employees, salary is only part of the conversation.

A teacher may look at their paycheck, but they are also thinking about health insurance, retirement, family needs, time off, professional development and whether they feel supported by the organization they work for.

The 2026 BLS Employee Benefits Survey shows just how significant retirement benefits are for teachers. Among primary, secondary and special education school teachers in state and local government, 99% had access to retirement benefits and 89% participated.

That makes benefits more than a line item on a compensation report. They are part of the value employees see in staying with an organization.

Education organizations should periodically ask:
Is our benefits package competitive?
Do employees understand what is available to them?
Are we communicating benefits effectively?
Are we helping employees prepare for their future?
And are we offering the kind of support that makes people want to stay?

A benefits checkup can reveal opportunities that may otherwise be overlooked.

Teachers are often asked to do a lot with limited resources, and many end up spending their own money on the classroom.

Books. Supplies. Equipment. Computer-related expenses. Professional development.

For eligible educators, the IRS allows a deduction of up to $300 for qualifying unreimbursed educator expenses. If both spouses are eligible educators filing jointly, the combined maximum can be $600, with no more than $300 attributable to each spouse. The IRS also states that beginning in 2026, qualifying educator expenses may be deductible as an itemized deduction.

Eligibility and tax treatment matter, so teachers should keep documentation and talk with a qualified tax professional about their individual situation.

But there is a bigger conversation here, too.
When employees routinely spend their own money to perform their jobs, organizations should take a close look at what resources, reimbursements and employee benefits are available to them.

Teachers give a tremendous amount to their students.
The question is: how much are we investing back into the people doing the teaching?

Every day, teachers invest in someone else’s future.

They prepare lessons. Answer questions. Encourage students who are struggling. Celebrate the small victories. Stay late. Buy things for their classrooms. Take work home. And often give far more of themselves than their job description ever requires.

Teaching is more than a job. It is an investment in people.
That is why investing in teachers should mean more than simply looking at a salary.

For education organizations, supporting teachers also means looking at the entire employee experience — benefits, retirement, payroll, HR support, professional development, leave policies, employee communication and the systems behind the scenes that help employees feel supported.

The numbers reinforce the importance of looking at the whole picture. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports that in March 2026, 94% of primary, secondary and special education teachers in state and local government had access to retirement benefits, with 89% participating.

Compensation matters. But so does everything that comes with the job.

This week, we’re looking at the people who spend their careers investing in the next generation — and how education organizations can invest in them.
