For years, Allegheny County’s 911 dispatchers have quietly grappled with a growing mental health crisis that has forced them to face, firsthand, the same tragedies they confront daily over the phone.

In August 2024, a dispatcher committed su***de at the county’s 911 call center in Coraopolis.

In June, another operator attempted su***de in the same parking lot, just a few yards from where other dispatchers were working.

“Something needs to change,” said Michele Panella-Mildrich, business agent for the SEIU Local 668 union, which represents the dispatchers. “People need to realize that just because you don’t see the dispatchers, we exist, we’re out here, and we’re struggling.”

Panella-Mildrich worked as a county dispatcher for nearly two decades, beginning in 2005 when Pittsburgh 911 merged with the county’s operation, and said she believes several of her colleagues have died, in part, due to mental health struggles associated with the job.

“I can probably name five or six other coworkers of mine that have succumbed,” she said. “Some have taken their own lives, others had trauma and have had issues with drug addiction, so there were overdoses, but you don’t hear about them because it wasn’t public … We want to try to prevent another tragedy.”
