A study on hypoxia-driven biofilm formation by Supardy and Kumar offers clear insight into why diabetic foot ulcers are so difficult to resolve.

When wound tissue lacks sufficient oxygen, bacteria quickly attach and build a protective barrier known as a biofilm. This matrix prevents antibiotics from reaching the infection, driving high rates of recurrence. This research reinforces that surface-level treatment is rarely enough, and points to the notion that addressing non-healing wounds should also focus on targeting the biological conditions beneath the surface.

There are many new trends in the cosmetic market, from vitamin C serums to peptide complexes, but oxygen is one that seems to keep resurfacing.

Back in 2013, researchers published a study showing that dissolved oxygen applied to the skin reduced inflammation and had a positive effect on skin structure in healthy volunteers. That built on earlier research from 2010 showing oxygen can actually pe*****te deep into human skin, not just sit on the surface.

Long before oxygen became a mainstream skincare buzzword, this kind of foundational research was already being published.

A recent study published in the International Wound Journal highlights a key detail in how we think about chronic wound care.

Researchers compared topical oxygen therapy to standard moist wound care and found the oxygen therapy group had a much higher healing rate early on, 45.5 percent versus 11.4 percent at day 28. By week 12, both groups had similar overall closure rates.

But there's an important detail underneath that: patients receiving oxygen therapy still healed an average of 13.5 days faster, even once both groups mostly closed.

Faster healing isn't just a number. Chronic wounds are widely understood to carry real costs the longer they stay open, more time at risk of infection, more pain, more disruption to daily life. Nearly two weeks is a meaningful difference for the person living with it.
