An exit interview isn’t research. It’s an autopsy. 💔
By the time an employee sits down for that conversation, the decision has usually been made. And you may not get the full story—you may get the version that protects the relationship and preserves the reference.
The better conversation happens months earlier, while there’s still time to act.
Three questions to ask during a stay interview:
1️⃣ What might make you consider leaving within the next six months?
2️⃣ What have you stopped bringing up because nothing changed the last time?
3️⃣ Who do you learn the most from here—and are you getting enough time with them?
The second question is often the most revealing. It can uncover frustrations that have been quietly building long before a resignation reaches your inbox.
Exit interviews help you understand what went wrong.
Stay interviews help you address it before someone decides to leave. 💪
