When Innovation Outpaces Oversight: The AI Graduation Lesson 🎓🤖
Technology is supposed to enhance our most important moments, not overshadow them. Last week, Glendale Community College learned this the hard way when an AI name-reading system skipped hundreds of graduates and mispronounced others, leading to boos from the crowd and a frantic "do-over" with a human reader.
As IT leaders and business owners, we have to ask: Where are the boundaries?
AI is a powerful tool for efficiency, but it lacks the "situational awareness" that a human provides. In this case, the efficiency of an AI reader couldn't replace the dignity of a student’s moment.
The Lessons for SMBs:
🛡️High-Stakes = High Oversight: If a process is "one-and-done" or emotionally significant (like a graduation or a major client pitch), AI should be the assistant, not the lead.
🛡️The "Kill Switch" Protocol: Do your teams know when to pull the plug on an AI tool and pivot back to manual processes?
🛡️Governance is Non-Negotiable: Implementing AI without a "human-in-the-loop" safeguard isn't innovation—it's a risk.
🛡️Innovation requires bravery, but scaling requires boundaries. Let's use AI to power the engine, but keep a human hand on the steering wheel.
Technology should make us more human, not less. If you’re ready to learn how to build AI workflows with the right guardrails, join our upcoming webinar!
