Networking

In your opinion, which is more effective in conjunction with setting up a marketing and networking campaign, “Virtual” or “In Person” Compliance and Regulatory Conferences? I believe that in person conferences are overall more effective.”

I believe they are superior because individuals can meet face-to-face, and not be interrupted with Amazon dropping off packages to their house, the dog barking, or losing internet and software connections or other interruptions that typically occur when working from home.

While I believe Virtual Conferences are better than not having conferences at all, I believe there should be a push to go back to In Person Conferences once it is determined to be safe to do so.

Risk Management - Proactive or Reactive?

Has your firm developed Risk Management policies and procedures? If so, has your firm developed an approach to ensure your Risk Management practices are being followed? I have seen firms take various approaches to tackle their Risk Management obligations such as relying on Compliance, Internal Audit and/or outsourcing many of their Risk Management responsibilities. Whichever approach you use, I recommend a Business Risk Register be created to formalize, document and implement all significant risks that have been identified.

I suggest that the Risk Register, at a minimum, include categories such as: 1) Risk Identification, 2) Inherent Risk Ratings, 3) Mitigating Risk Controls, 4) Residual Risk Ratings, and 5) the Development of an Action Plan for situations where the firm determines the amount of Residual Risk is too high and needs to be lowered to a satisfactory level.

Whether internal and/or external staffing resources are used to develop a Risk Management program, I encourage the appropriate level of support be devoted to the development and management of an effective and robust Risk Management program.
