AI can save hours of work. It can also automate the wrong decision at scale.
That is why I don’t start an AI conversation by asking, “What can we automate?”
I start with the process.
What is predictable enough for conventional automation?
Where does interpretation actually add value?
And where does a person still need to make the decision?
A workflow rule doesn’t need AI.
An incoming customer request might.
A pricing or compliance decision may need AI assistance—but still require human judgment.
The architecture I prefer is straightforward:
Clear process → Reliable data → Automation for predictable work → AI for interpretation → Human oversight where consequences matter
The objective is not to put AI everywhere.
It is to use the right amount of AI, in the right place, for a clear business reason.
I go deeper into that framework in our latest article: How Much AI Does Your Business Actually Need?
