SIGNIFICANT NOR’EASTER SATURDAY AND SUNDAY: HYBRID SYSTEM = COMBINATION OF REGULAR NOR’EASTER AND TROPICAL SYSTEM
ISSUES TO CONTEND WITH:
1. WIND/POWER OUTAGES: persistent onshore northeast winds 25-35mph with gusts to 60mph last for multiple days on fully foliated trees will result in widespread wind damage to trees…limbs will come down and likely result in power outages. Outages could take longer than usual to restore, so it can’t hurt to prepare for that.
2. COASTAL FLOODING: long duration onshore flow spanning multiple tide cycles and a high astronomical tide (full moon) will lead to coastal flooding and beach erosion. The severity of the flooding will depend on how we time the strongest winds with a high tide. Combining the strongest winds with a high tide could result in moderate to major coastal flooding, but, we can’t be certain of this just yet.
3. HEAVY RAIN: a prolonged storm with an infusion of tropical air/energy…and we are setting the stage for widespread heavy rain, 2-4” with some places getting 6”+.
The exact track of this storm is still a little uncertain…largely due to the fact that it’s a merging of two systems. It’s a large storm so the probability of impacts is very high…but how close we get to the center of the “tropical” storm piece of this will determine if this is a higher-end impact…or a more typical nor’easter impact.
50-60mph gusts may not sound all that crazy, but again, our trees are still full of leaves and that extra drag on the branches over 2 days…it’s going to bring down a bunch of branches…the power outages are going to be significant.
Bottom line: prepare for a Nor’easter…it’ll likely last most of Saturday and Sunday. Power outages are possible and they could be longer than usual. It’s nothing we haven’t seen before…but if/when the tropical storm component of this system comes close to Southern New England then we may up the ante on wind and rain…to a level a little worse than a generic Nor’easter.
