DiSC® is simply an acronym incorporating the four basic styles from William Marlowe Marston’s 1928 book, “The Emotions of Normal People.”

However, Marston never copyrighted his book as he wanted others to benefit from and further develop his work.

This was later more fully advanced by Dr. John Geier. Geier developed an effective assessment and hired other psychologists to continue the work, ultimately leaving Geier to pursue their DISC instruments.

To differentiate this original work of Geier and other DISC models, a lowercase “i” was adopted and trademarked.
