🌿 HERBAL SMOKE, LUNG HEALTH & THE TRADITION OF PLANT MEDICINE 🌿

🤔 🫁 Can you “detox” the lungs? Did you know that using plants through smoke and inhalation has a long history in traditional medicine around the world and has scientific evidence for supporting lung health?

Long before modern pharmaceuticals, healers used plants in many forms—including teas, poultices, fumigations, aromatic smoke and inhalation. Historical records describe medicinal smoke being used for everything from respiratory complaints to neurological and skin conditions. A review documenting medicinal-smoke practices across 50 countries and five continents found that pulmonary conditions were actually the most frequently reported medical indication. (PubMed)

✨Smoke was also used for purposes beyond direct treatment—such as cleansing spaces, repelling insects, preserving materials. (PubMed)

📚But history and modern science are two different things.

The fact that a plant was traditionally smoked does not mean that inhaling its smoke is proven to treat asthma, infection, mold exposure or lung disease. In fact, burning plant material changes its chemistry and creates particulate matter and other combustion products. (PubMed Central (PMC))

🌬️ So why are these herbs traditionally interesting?

Our Anima Mundi Herbal Smoke Blend, available at Forage Medicine Clinic, brings together plants with long histories in herbalism:

🌿 Mullein — traditionally associated with the respiratory system; laboratory and preclinical research has identified antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.

🌿 Damiana — historically used in traditional medicine for a variety of complaints, including respiratory concerns; preliminary research has identified antioxidant and antimicrobial activity.

🌿 Skullcap — traditionally valued as a calming nervine and for relaxation.

🌿 Mugwort — historically used in numerous herbal traditions and ritual practices for cleansing and transition. Important: mugwort can be allergenic, particularly for people sensitive to the ragweed/Asteraceae family.

🌿 Raspberry Leaf — traditionally valued as an astringent and nourishing botanical.

🌹 Rose — associated with soothing, emotional balance, compassion and heart-centered traditions.

🌼 Calendula — traditionally valued for skin and mucosal support and studied for antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activity.

💙 Blue Cornflower — traditionally associated with beauty, and clarity.

Many of us are exposed to mold, va**ng, cannabis smoke, wildfire smoke, pollution and seasonal allergens.

Your lungs already have sophisticated mechanisms for removing particles and protecting themselves. The most evidence-based way to support lung health is to reduce exposure to inhaled irritants, avoid smoking/va**ng when possible, manage underlying allergies or asthma appropriately, and address environmental exposures such as indoor mold.

So at Forage, we like to take a both/and approach:

🌿 Honor traditional plant wisdom.
🔬 Look at what modern research actually shows.
🌬️ Respect the lungs and minimize unnecessary smoke exposure.

This blend can be appreciated as a traditional herbal smoking experience, but it should not be viewed as a treatment for asthma, mold toxicity, bacterial or viral lung infections, or as a proven “lung detox.”

Your lungs deserve just as much attention as every other part of your body. 🌬️💚

✨FMC Testimonial: “I’ve had asthma all my life and I v**e. I tied the herbal blend and my wheeze and cough is gone after trying a couple rolled blends.”

🌿💊OVER-SUPPLEMENTATION is real.

“More” is not always better, and sometimes it’s riskier!

✨Supplements should support your health, not overwhelm it.

⚠️Supplement safety matters: Over-supplementation can lead to:
• Vitamin toxicity
• Nutrient interactions
• Drug interactions
• “Stacking” when multiple products contain the same ingredients can lead to over-supplementation.

☯️Vitamins and minerals can be helpful when there’s a true need, but taking too many, too often, taking multiple products, or obtaining from unreliable sources can create hidden risks.

⚠️Supplements can cause adverse effects:
• Drug interactions
• Reduced effectiveness
• Enhanced effectiveness
• Synergistic interactions
• Affect absorption
• GI burden or biome disruption
• Delayed care
• Over-supplementation may mask true clinical signs and symptoms
• Create a medication/supplement burden
• The same ingredient is often duplicated across products

⚠️Nutrient absorption in the digestive tract varies:
• How is your gut’s efficiency at absorbing nutrients/supplements?
• Is a GI stool/urine test necessary?

👅Nutrient absorption is affected by other supplements/prescriptions:
• Some supplements lose their potency, or their potency is enhanced

❓Do you know WHEN or HOW to take your supplements?
• With or without food
• With or without another supplement
• With or without your prescription medication
• How much time should be spaced between supplements/medication
• AM or PM

✍🏽This is not an inclusive list, but an important reminder that supplements can be helpful or harmful depending on the dose, the combination, and your individual health needs.

🩵Safer approach:
Before adding a supplement, check the dose, the label, whether it is from a reliable source, and if another product already contains the same nutrient.

🙌🏽You and your practitioner should have a clear clinical goal rather than taking a supplement “just in case.”

✅Please schedule a personalized consultation before starting, stopping, or combining supplements.

🦟469 Mosquitos Liked Our Post!

🌿☀️ Natural Bug Defense for Summer: Cedarwood, Lemongrass, Geranium, Thyme essential oils + Neem oil☀️🦟

💛☀️Love the warm evenings but not the mosquitoes? You can use plant allies to help keep bugs at bay—smelling like a summer garden instead of a chemistry lab.

😊We’re proud to highlight Mountain Rose Herbs Organic Essential Oils available through our website (https://foragemedicineclinic.com/).

✅Clinic-approved summer blend recipe 👇

Why these botanicals?

• Cedarwood – Rich in sesquiterpenes that many insects find unappealing; traditionally used in cabins and chests to repel pests.
• Lemongrass – Contains citronella-like compounds that confuse mosquitoes’ olfactory receptors, making you “invisible” or uninteresting as a target.[aaresearchindex]
• Geranium – Certain geranium oils show repellent activity against mosquito species in lab studies; often used in natural blends for its floral, fresh scent.[nih +1]
• Thyme – Thyme essential oil (thymol, carvacrol, α‑terpinene) has demonstrated strong mosquito-repellent and even larvicidal activity in research.[nih +2]
• Neem oil – Used for centuries in Ayurveda; studies show diluted neem oil can reduce bites from several mosquito species, especially in endemic regions.[nih +1]
Together, they create a multi-layered scent profile that masks your natural attractants (CO₂, sweat, skin volatiles) and makes landing and feeding less appealing to bugs.

Common DIY approaches:
• Body spray/roll-on:
• Carrier: fractionated coconut oil, neem oil, jojoba, or unscented lotion.
• Typical adult dilution: ~1–2% total essential oils (e.g., 6–12 drops total EO per 30 mL carrier).

🩵Example blend idea:
• Lemongrass 3 drops
• Geranium 3 drops
• Cedarwood 2 drops
• Thyme (chemotype linalool if available) 2 drops
• Neem oil: a small amount (e.g., 5–10% of the oil phase) for extra “bug-no” energy, knowing it has a strong, earthy scent.

🪭Room/porch diffuser:
• Lemongrass + cedarwood + a touch of geranium in a water diffuser for outdoor gatherings. Higher concentrations (e.g., 10–20% lemongrass in diffuser blends) showed stronger mosquito-repellent effects in experimental settings.

Natural repellents tend to be shorter-acting than DEET/picaridin, so think: reapply every 1–2 hours for outdoor time, especially if sweating or swimming.

⚠️Important cautions:
• Patch test first. Essential oils can irritate or sensitize skin, especially lemongrass and thyme.[nih]
• Dilute properly. Never apply undiluted essential oils or straight neem oil to skin.

🧑‍🍼Children & pregnancy:
• Avoid essential-oil-based repellents on infants; use clothing, screens, and fans first.
• In pregnancy and for young kids, stick to very gentle, low-dose blends and avoid thyme, lemongrass, and high-phenol chemotypes unless guided by a qualified practitioner.

☀️Photosensitivity: Some citrusy/lemongrass-type oils can increase sun sensitivity in sensitive individuals; use on covered areas or at dusk.

🐾Pets: Cats and some pets are sensitive to essential oils; diffuse in well-ventilated areas and keep pets free to leave the room.

📝Fun summer notes:
• Mosquitoes are most active at dawn and dusk—perfect for a gentle evening roll-on before patio teas or neighborhood walks.
• Fans are a surprisingly powerful “non-toxin” bug strategy: mosquitoes are weak fliers; moving air makes it hard for them to land.

☯️From a Forage/TCM lens: you’re supporting the body’s “wei qi” boundary by reducing external “wind-damp/toxic” assaults (aka bug bites and the itch-scratch cycle).

SUMMER ESSENTIALS: ELIXIRS, HYDRATION & RITUAL FOR THE SEASON OF LIGHT ☀️

July is the height of the season. Long days, hot light, and the body asked to move through all of it: outdoors, in ritual, in constant contact with sun and salt and heat.

☀️"Summer asks more of the body than any other season does. More hydration, more protection, more coolant for a nervous system meeting heat and motion from sunrise to close. True vitality this time of year isn't just a surface fix. It's the adaptogenic elixirs replenishing what the heat depletes, the after-sun rituals restoring what salt and sun take from skin and hair, the natural protection that lets the body move freely outdoors, and the grounding smoke and stone that keep energy steady through long, bright days and warm, exposed nights."

🫘 NATTOKINASE 🫘

❓What is it? Mainly, an enzyme derived from fermented soybeans. It has fibrinolytic activity that benefits the cardiovascular system.
• Supports circulation and BLOOD FLOW
• Helps to prevent/break down BLOOD CLOTS or FIBRIN (a protein involved in clot formation)
• Supports healthy BLOOD PRESSURE

❓How do I get it? In FOOD!
• Natto: fermented soybeans, usually eaten with rice
• Tempeh: a fermented soy cake that can be sautéed, grilled, stir-fried, or used in sandwiches and bowls
• Miso: a fermented soybean paste used in soup, marinades, dressings, and sauces.

❓How does Food vs Supplements compare?

• ✅ Natto: primary natural source of nattokinase
• ✅ Tempeh: a nutritious fermented soy food, but not a reliable nattokinase source.
• Supplement: higher, standardized dose; better if someone is specifically trying to get nattokinase activity.

—>Natto is the main food source of nattokinase, but the amount varies a lot by brand and fermentation conditions. A typical 50-gram serving is often cited at roughly 1,000 to 2,000 FU of nattokinase activity, though some sources put it around 1,500 FU per serving.

⚠️ Because it may thin the blood, nattokinase can increase bleeding risk and may not be safe with blood thinners or before surgery, so it should not replace prescribed treatment.
⚠️ Ginkgo, garlic, ginger, turmeric/curcumin, fish oil, and vitamin E can all potentially add to bleeding risk when paired with nattokinase.
⚠️ Blood pressure supplements or medications may also have an additive lowering effect with nattokinase.

🥷 Battlefield Acupuncture at Forage Medicine Clinic 🥷

Fast, gentle support for PAIN relief.

Battlefield acupuncture is a focused EAR ACUPUNCTURE technique used to help reduce pain quickly and support the body’s natural pain regulation. It is often used for headaches, neck pain, back pain, joint pain, muscle tension, and other acute or chronic pain concerns.

☯️ Calms the nervous system

✨ Supports the body’s endorphin release, which can help change how pain is perceived

🔪 Commonly used for pain that feels sharp, tight, inflamed, or persistent

✅ Often used for headaches, neck pain, back pain, joint pain, and muscle tension

❇️ A good option for people looking for a drug-free, minimally invasive pain support option. Reduces or eliminates opioid prescriptions

🏡 Dr. Anne Setnor uses 1-10 ASP ear needles, tiny acupuncture needles placed in specific points of the ear and left in after the visit so they can keep working for days

⚠️ Not everyone is a good candidate, including some people with bleeding disorders, active infection, or certain medical conditions

💲 $50 for a 15-minute walk-in appointment

A little history:
Battlefield acupuncture was developed in the early 2000s by U.S. Air Force physician Dr. Richard Niemtzow as a fast, practical way to help relieve pain in military settings when immediate treatment was needed. Acupuncture has been documented for 4000+ years in classic literature
