Throwback Thursday!

Taking it back to the Crop Crate: a modular, intelligent indoor growing system designed to create a controlled environment for plant cultivation, agricultural research, and education.

In April of 2019, we brought a Crop Crate to Rockford Middle School to enhance the school’s STEM and agricultural curriculum. Instead of simply teaching students about plant growth, the system gave them a way to see controlled-environment agriculture and hydroponic growing in action.

While the Crop Crate may not be something we produce or use today, the idea behind it is still important. Agriculture is constantly evolving, but helping the next generation understand how plants grow, where food comes from, and why crop research matters never goes out of date.

It’s a fun piece of our history and a reminder that sometimes planting curiosity is just as important as planting seeds. 🌱📚

Welcome back, Bengals! 🐅🧡🖤

As students return to Idaho State University, we want to wish the Bengal community a fantastic semester ahead!

Did you know that 25:2's headquarters is located in Pocatello, Idaho, home of Idaho State University? Our team is honored to be part of a community that values education, innovation, and scientific discovery.

We couldn't help but notice one of our bean varieties showing off a little Bengal spirit.

At 25:2, unique traits like these naturally orange-and-black seed coats become valuable data that help us develop the next generation of crop varieties.

Here's to another semester of learning, innovation, and growing something great, both on campus and in the field. 🌱

Amaranth Trials: Look at Them Now! 🌱

Earlier this season, we shared a glimpse of our amaranth trials when the plants were still young. Fast forward to now, and they’re showing off some incredible variation.

From bright green to deep burgundy foliage, along with developing seed heads and distinct plant characteristics. Following these plants throughout the season gives us a chance to see how each variety changes as it matures.

MISSION MONDAY 🌱

Building Layers of Intelligence

No single measurement tells the whole story.

A flower's color. A plant's height. The number of pods. Seed size. Disease response. Genetic markers.

On their own, each observation is just one piece of information. But when hundreds of traits are measured across thousands of plants and integrated together, they create something much more powerful, a deeper understanding of every variety.

Our mission is to build these layers of intelligence into our research engine, transforming observations into actionable insights for our partners. By combining phenotypic data, genetic information, and advanced analytics, we help breeders make more informed decisions, accelerate crop development, and unlock the potential within every variety.

Oat Trials in Action 🌾

This photo captures two stages of our oat trials side by side. The mature, golden oats in the background are ready for harvest, while the lush green oats in the foreground are a newer planting still actively growing.

METHOD MONDAY 🌸

At first glance, flower color might seem like it's only about appearance, but in plant breeding, it can reveal much more.

Flower color can serve as a visible genetic marker, helping researchers differentiate between varieties, track inherited traits, confirm plant identity, and collect consistent phenotypic data throughout a breeding program.

One fascinating example comes from peas. Purple flowers are typically associated with the presence of anthocyanin pigments, while white flowers often result from mutations in genes involved in anthocyanin production. Because these traits are inherited in predictable ways, flower color has long been used by plant breeders and even by Gregor Mendel in his classic genetics experiments to study inheritance.

Flower color is just one of the characteristics we evaluate. On its own, a single observation tells only part of the story. But when combined with measurements like plant architecture, flowering time, pod characteristics, disease response, seed traits, and genetic data, it becomes another valuable layer of intelligence.

Together, these observations help us better understand each variety, strengthen our research engine, and provide our partners with the insights they need to make more informed breeding decisions.

Throwback Thursday!

Swipe through to see the journey of our logo, from our first prototypes in 2018 to the refreshed identity we carry today as 25:2 Incorporated.

One detail from those earlier years still holds a special place: the orange "T," which subtly formed a cross. Inspired by Proverbs 25:2, "It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings," it was a quiet nod to both the faith behind our name and the spirit of discovery that drives our work.

As 25:2 has grown, our logo has grown simpler and more refined, while still standing for the same mission and values it was built on from the beginning.

Sunflower Spotlight 🌻

Swipe through to see the journey...

These beautiful sunflowers tower over our SeedBank field with their sturdy green stalks and vibrant yellow blooms. Fun fact: What looks like one giant flower is actually made up of 1,000 to 2,000 tiny individual flowers, each capable of producing its own seed!

Once the flowers begin to bloom, we carefully place pollination bags over selected flower heads. These bags prevent insects from bringing in unwanted pollen, allowing us to control pollination and preserve the genetic integrity of each breeding line.

And don't worry...the bee in the last photo wasn't trying to break the rules, he just missed the "Authorized Personnel Only" sign. 🐝

MOTIVATIONAL MONDAY 🌼

Just like these flowering flax plants, growth doesn't happen overnight. Every bloom is the result of time, patience, and consistent care. Trust the season you're in, what you plant today can become something beautiful tomorrow.

This or That: 25:2 SeedBank Field Edition! 🌱

- Leafless or leafed?
- Awned or awnless?
- Purple or green?

The differences between these plants are more than just appearance. Each variety carries unique traits that can impact performance, quality, and future breeding potential.

By collecting and analyzing these characteristics, we help our clients and partners make informed decisions about which varieties have the greatest potential for the next generation of crops.

So... which would you choose?
