Curtis Smith has been a strong advocate for firefighters across Idaho for many years, but for Local 187, he has been so much more. As President Emeritus he has been an integral part of our union — a steady source of knowledge, experience, and leadership that has helped guide Local 187. Curtis has sacrificed greatly on behalf of all of us, and we are deeply grateful for his unwavering dedication.

It's been a fun and exciting couple weeks for academy 26-01! Your L187 recruits have been learning vehicle extrication and technical rescue, and also had time to visit Dispatch and Station 4 which covers the Pocatello Airport. They continue to hone their skills to respond to your emergency, no matter the nature of the call. In three short weeks they'll go on shift and continue their training as Probationary Firefighters!

Your L187 Pocatello Firefighters have been staffing a brush truck on a two week deployment to Beaver, UT to help fight the Cottonwood Fire, currently the states 6th largest fire in recorded history at 93,000 acres. Among other tasks, our crew has been helping build defensible space around homes and assisting residents in retrieving belongings during evacuations. This is a good moment to remind you to be careful this July 4th as we celebrate America's 250th birthday. High winds and dry fuels make the fire danger extreme around Pocatello. Please follow the regulations on fireworks - check to see if you are in a no-fireworks zone, and if not please only use "safe and sane" fireworks to avoid setting your neighbors house on fire!

The Pocatello Fire Department extends our deepest condolences to the families, friends, and crews of the three wildland firefighters who tragically lost their lives on the Snyder Fire.

These brave individuals made the ultimate sacrifice protecting our public lands and neighboring communities. Their courage and selflessness will never be forgotten.

To our wildland brothers and sisters still on the lines: Stay safe.
