Tick bites can cause disease. As we head into warmer weather, be tick AWARE! ๐Ÿ•ท๏ธโ˜€๏ธ

๐Ÿšซ AVOID tick habitats like wood piles, leaf litter, tall grass, beach grass, stone walls, bushy areas, and where lawns meet the woods.

๐Ÿ‘– WEAR light-colored clothing to spot ticks easily. Choose long sleeves, tuck shirts into pants, pants into socks, wear closed-toe shoes, and avoid walking barefoot or in sandals through grass.

๐Ÿงด APPLY EPA-approved repellents (like picaridin or DEET) on skin and permethrin on clothing and shoes as directed.

๐Ÿ‘š REMOVE clothing when you get home and place items in the dryer on high heat for 10โ€“15 minutes to kill ticks (the washer alone wonโ€™t do it).

๐Ÿ”Ž EXAMINE yourself and your pets daily. Check carefully behind knees, groin, armpits, ears, belly button, scalp, and other hidden areas.

โœ… Stay vigilant and protect yourself, your family, and your pets this tick season!

Lyme disease is the most common tick-borne disease in Ohio, and it has grown significantly over the past decade from just 37 cases in 2010 to 1,785 cases in 2024. You can reduce your risk of Lyme disease by:

โœ… Wearing light-colored, long-sleeved shirts tucked into pants and tucking pants into socks to keep ticks on the outside of your clothes
โœ… Using EPA-registered repellents (like DEET or picaridin) on your skin and treating gear and clothes with permethrin
โœ… Checking for ticks after being outdoors
โœ… Removing ticks promptly by grasping the tick with clean, fine-tipped tweezers as close to the skinโ€™s surface as possible and pulling straight up with even pressure
โœ… Staying alert for symptoms of Lyme disease such as fever, rash, or joint pain.

June is Great Outdoors Month! Spending time outdoors in nature can help promote physical activity, reduce stress, and provide opportunities for relaxation. This month is a great opportunity to explore some of our beautiful state parks, but make sure you take steps to prevent tick bites. Use an EPA registered insect repellant and try to avoid wooded and brushy areas with high grass and leaf litter. Learn more about tick bite prevention: www.mahoninghealth.org/ticks.

The longer a tick is attached, the more likely you are to develop a tickborne illness. Perform regular tick checks after being outside to ensure that ticks are removed as soon as possible! If you find an engorged tick, send it in for testing! Visit ticklab.org/test-my-tick to learn more!

Now that you know about the most common pathogens blacklegged ticks carry, here's an idea of how many ticks carry them. Of the ticks we tested, one in two was infected with a pathogen. If you find a tick, send it in to have it tested! Go to ticklab.org/test-my-tick to order your test today!

Ticks can carry more than one pathogen and transmit it simultaneously. A person with a Lyme disease co-infection generally experiences more severe illness, more symptoms, and a longer recovery.
