Sometimes clients ask me to fix a computer with proprietary software so old that the original developer is probably retired, fishing somewhere, and completely unaware he's still critical infrastructure.

🚨 New Ransomware Threat Alert: Payouts King 🚨

Cybercriminals continue to evolve, and Payouts King is one of the most sophisticated ransomware threats we've seen in 2026.

Unlike traditional malware that security software can often detect, Payouts King is specifically designed to bypass many Endpoint Detection & Response (EDR) platforms by communicating directly with the Windows kernel through low-level system calls.

What makes this threat dangerous?

🔹 Uses Microsoft Quick Assist to gain legitimate remote access
🔹 Impersonates IT support through email spam campaigns and phone calls
🔹 Disables security software before encryption begins
🔹 Deletes shadow copies and event logs to hinder recovery
🔹 Steals sensitive data before encrypting files
🔹 Uses hidden virtual machines to evade endpoint visibility

How the attack typically starts:

1️⃣ Employee receives hundreds of spam emails.
2️⃣ Attacker calls pretending to be IT support.
3️⃣ Employee launches Quick Assist.
4️⃣ Attacker gains remote access.
5️⃣ Security tools are disabled.
6️⃣ Data is stolen and encrypted.

What businesses should do now:

✅ Restrict unauthorized use of Quick Assist
✅ Train employees to verify all support requests
✅ Enable multi-factor authentication
✅ Monitor for suspicious scheduled tasks
✅ Maintain offline and immutable backups
✅ Ensure cybersecurity tools provide kernel-level visibility
✅ Test incident response and recovery procedures

The biggest lesson:

Technology alone is not enough.

Most modern ransomware attacks begin with social engineering, not software vulnerabilities. Employee awareness, strong security controls, and tested recovery plans remain your best defense.

If you're unsure whether your organization is protected against modern ransomware techniques, now is a good time to review your cybersecurity posture.

If every computer in your business stopped working tomorrow, what would happen?

Could you continue operating?

Could you access customer information?

Could you restore your data?

Could you serve clients?

Cybersecurity is really about business continuity.

Every business should know:
• Where critical data is stored
• How backups are performed
• Who is responsible during an incident
• How long recovery would take

The strongest businesses aren't the ones that never experience problems.

They're the ones that can recover quickly when problems occur.

A simple recovery plan can make the difference between a temporary inconvenience and a major business disruption.

FAKE CHATGPT DOWNLOADS ARE STEALING PASSWORDS
Cybercriminals are now creating fake ChatGPT download websites that look almost identical to the real thing.

The result?
❌ Stolen passwords
❌ Browser data theft
❌ Cryptocurrency wallet theft
❌ Malware infections on BOTH Windows and Mac computers

Security researchers found a fake ChatGPT download page that was delivering credential-stealing malware to Windows users and Atomic Stealer (AMOS) malware to Mac users. The bad guys know AI is popular.

☕️ Nothing says “good morning” like waking up to news that a 17-million-device botnet just got taken down.

Dutch authorities and the National Cyber Security Centre dismantled a massive criminal network linked to more than 17 million infected computers, smartphones, tablets, and IoT devices. They seized over 200 servers that were being used to support cyberattacks, phishing campaigns, spam operations, and proxy services that hid criminal activity behind unsuspecting victims' internet connections.

For those of us in cybersecurity, this is better than coffee. ☕

Just another reminder:
✅ Keep devices patched
✅ Use MFA everywhere
✅ Don't ignore security alerts
✅ That old router in the closet might be helping criminals more than it's helping you

Today, the good guys scored a win. 🛡️

📢 17 million infected devices. 200 servers seized. One less botnet causing problems for everyone. I'll take that with my morning coffee. ☕️😎

🚨 FBI WARNING: Microsoft 365 Users Targeted by New AI-Powered Phishing Attack 🚨

The FBI is warning organizations about a new phishing platform called **Kali365** that can bypass traditional login protections and even steal access to Microsoft 365 accounts without capturing your password. Attackers use legitimate Microsoft login pages to trick users into approving access, allowing them to access Outlook, Teams, OneDrive, and other Microsoft services.

⚠️ What to watch for:
• Unexpected Microsoft verification requests
• Emails asking you to enter a device code
• Shared document or cloud storage notifications you weren't expecting
• Urgent login or account verification messages

✅ Protect your business:
• Enable and review Conditional Access policies
• Train employees to recognize phishing attempts
• Verify all login requests before approving them
• Monitor Microsoft 365 sign-in activity regularly

Phishing attacks are evolving fast, and criminals are now using AI to make them more convincing than ever. A strong cybersecurity strategy is no longer optional.

Identity attacks are exploding in 2026.

Hackers aren’t “breaking in” anymore — they’re logging in using stolen Microsoft 365 accounts, fake MFA prompts, session hijacking, and phishing attacks.

Small businesses are now major targets.

One employee click can lead to ransomware, payroll fraud, or exposed customer data.

42 million Spectrum customer records may have been stolen because of ONE fake phone call.

Not malware.
Not some Hollywood hacker scene.

A vishing attack.

Hackers reportedly tricked an employee, gained access to a Microsoft Entra account, and pulled data directly from Salesforce systems.

The stolen data may include:
• Names
• Addresses
• Phone numbers
• Email addresses
• Account details
• Support ticket information

The group behind it says they’ll leak the data publicly if negotiations don’t happen before May 27.

This is why cybersecurity training matters.

Most breaches today are not “hackers breaking in.”
They’re people being manipulated.

If you’re a Spectrum customer:
• Change your password now
• Enable MFA/2FA
• Watch for fake Spectrum calls/texts
• Freeze your credit with all bureaus

One phone call.
42 million records.

That’s the reality of cybersecurity in 2026. Polson Montana Chamber of Commerce New Life Church Polson
