It’s always interesting to see what an owl has coughed up- in this case, remnants of a blue jay. Owls often prefer evergreens for roosting and mature deciduous trees as well as snags for nesting and high-visibility hunting perches. Understory shrubbery is also important as it provides cover for their prey. Active forest management creates a mix of forest types and age classes and structural diversity, all of which support bird populations. Photo courtesy of HFP forester Mark Mueller.
