The Sandhill cranes are back! They have returned to an interior wildlife food plot -planted with clover and turnip- at one of our working woodlands in Blandford, Massachusetts. Sandhill cranes are one of the oldest species of bird and have been around for millions of years. They have a wingspan as long as 6.5 feet and can fly as far as 400 miles a day during migration. At the beginning of the year they leave Mexico and the southern U.S. and migrate to breeding grounds as far north as Canada and Alaska. In the fall they return south.

Sandhill cranes eat seeds, berries, roots, and grains as well as small amphibians, and they like freshwater wetlands. Actively managed forests are able to offer diverse and dynamic wildlife habitat - and we are glad that we have an enticing spot for the cranes to visit.

It was a rainy day for our employee picnic, but we still had fun with friends, food, fun raffle prizes, and fireworks. Thanks to all who braved the weather with us!

Hull Forest Products hosted a log scaling workshop and sawmill tour today for forestry students from Yale School of the Environment who are spending part of their summer at the Yale-Myers Forest. Students learned firsthand how many different people are involved in the process of growing, managing, harvesting, trucking, and processing forest products for the global bioeconomy. Thanks to Perry Sawyer, procurement manager at HFP, Mark Huddock, manager of our Pomfret log yard, and Owen Klein at the Yale-Myers Forest, for facilitating.
