Consumer Warning... Traveling "Road Show" type events are really a buying event in disguise, and the "Free Appraisal" is a trap.
After seeing a recent advertisement for a well known televised "Road Show" event that invited the public to "bring in your valuables for a free appraisal" it occurred to me that most people don't understand how these businesses operate.
They attract consumers who have valuables that they don't know the worth of with a free verbal appraisal. That is exactly the type of opportunity they are looking for. The unsuspecting consumer is curious about their item, and it's free. So why not?
The appraiser (buyer) then proceeds to examine the item while they feel out how eager the person is to sell. Once they have a feel for what might be the lowest price that might be acceptable, an offer is made.
Since the consumer is uninformed, many times the low offer seems reasonable and they are encouraged to sell the item on the spot. This high pressure method of buying is common to many buying/appraisal events and the consumer usually ends up with a poor return on the sale of their item.
So what's my recommendation? Don't enter into a selling negotiation with out knowing what your item is worth. Get an appraisal from a qualified appraiser who is NOT A BUYER or SELLER! Seek out an independent appraiser who specializes in that kind of item. Make a small investment in knowledge before you talk with a buyer.
