TRAINING NOTICE – SATURDAY, MAY 30th

Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue will be hosting an all-day training event this Saturday, May 30th, in the area of 2600 Block Eden Valley Road. Training evolutions will include live fire scenarios designed to prepare firefighters for real-world emergencies.

Due to the nature of the training, traffic in the area may be impacted for much of the day, and residents may notice smoke from time to time. Please know that all training evolutions are carefully planned and conducted by experienced instructors with safety as the top priority.

The live fire training is expected to last most of the day with the acquired structure eventually being demolished in a controlled fire late in the afternoon.

Members of the community are advised there may be smoke in the area and several fire vehicles at the site, as well as traveling on Dan Kelly/Eden Valley Roads.

Thank you for your patience and support as we continue training to better serve our community.

Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue got the opportunity to recognize one of our members at the Footprinter Annual Officer of the Year dinner held on Monday, May 11th.

This years recipient was firefighter/paramedic Gary Arbuckle. Firefighter Arbuckle was recognized for his service in 2025 which went above and beyond.

Last year he not only continued to provide high level EMS care and firefighting, he took on several task outside his regular duties. Gary took over managing our quartermaster program which tracks, maintains, issues, and services our uniforms and personal protective equipment. He also regularly led EMS training for both our career and volunteer members during our Tuesday night volunteer drills. Gary is also an International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) evaluator who regularly assist with teaching and evaluating our new firefighters.

Congratulations to Gary and all the other public safety Officer of the Year recipients. Thank you to the Footprinters for recognizing the public safety agencies in Clallam County.

On Wednesday, May 6, 2026 Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue units were dispatched to the hiking trails off of Little River Road south of Port Angeles for a patient with an injured ankle. The call came in shortly after 9:00 AM and it was reported that the patient could not continue to walk. Another person with the injured hiker who reported their location was approximately 1.5 miles up the trail.

Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue units began responding to locate the patient and determine the best access. Through familiarization with the area, crews knew they may require additional equipment and resources if the patient needed to be packaged on a litter and carried out. A callout was made to all career and volunteer staff to provide additional personnel.

This incident also saw the first use of the fire district’s new UTV. This Polaris XP1000 vehicle was recently purchased using funding from a Federal Title III grant administered by Clallam County. The fire district submitted a grant request through Clallam County which was approved last year. The vehicle was purchased and placed into service in April. Normally this patient extraction would have required crews either to hand carry the patient, or place them on a wheeled litter and manually pull them out to the awaiting ambulance.

The new UTV was able to drive down the narrow access trail and transport the packaged patient out to an awaiting ambulance on the dirt access road. This saved time and personnel, as well as provided a safer, more efficient way to move the patient for transport to Olympic Medical Center.

Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue responded with the UTV, a rescue vehicle, and an ambulance with four personnel. Olympic Ambulance responded with an ambulance and three personnel.

The purchase of this UTV was accomplished using grant funding and provides enhanced capabilities for our crews to respond in remote, difficult to access locations.

This week is National Volunteer Week. Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue would like to recognize the long tradition of volunteerism (it’s a real word, I checked) here at the fire district. In 1944 a group of women had volunteered their time to help fight fires in Gales Addition. They had started what eventually became Clallam County Fire District 2 with the official formation of the fire district on January 1, 1945. The fire district has continued to rely on volunteer members for the last 80+ years.

Today, Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue is a combination fire agency, using full-time, part-time, and volunteer firefighters, EMTs and Paramedics. On this week we want to acknowledge the service of our volunteer members who have long been the backbone to our service delivery and continue serving their community today.

Thank you to the volunteer members of Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue, your service is much appreciated.

On Monday, April 20th, Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue had the opportunity to welcome six new part-time firefighters. These new part-time employees will be a welcome addition to our crews as the fire district continues to face increasing call volumes and demands for service. The fire district is getting creative to ensure we can provide the same high quality service to the community.

Each of these new part-time firefighters will be assigned to a rotating shift to help support and augment the full-time career firefighters. All have previous experience and are certified as firefighter/EMTs or firefighter/paramedic.

They will be conducting a 2-week onboarding with the fire district to learn the "District 2 Way" and then be assigned to shifts in early May.

Welcome aboard (L to R);

Regional Fire Academy Graduation

This past Friday, April 10th, 17 new firefighters were sworn in for several local fire agencies. Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue, Clallam County Fire District #3, Clallam County Fire District #4, and the Port Angeles Fire Department collaborate to conduct a regional fire academy to train new volunteer firefighters. The fire academy graduation ceremony was the culmination of 350 hours of hard work by the students and instructors that made Recruit Class 26-1 successful.

This fire academy is done in conjunction with the Washington State Fire Marshal’s Office Region Direct Delivery program. This program provides State level support with funding, equipment, and instructional assistance to help augment the local agencies efforts and instructors.

Recruit Class 26-01 actually started in November of 2025 with hazardous materials training and then continued into 2026 with final testing done at the end of March 2026. The recruits learned all aspects of structural and wildland firefighting, as well as their hazardous materials training. They attended classes on Wednesday and Thursday nights as well as all day Saturdays for the majority of the last six month. The recruits participated in their International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) testing for Hazardous Materials Awareness, Hazardous Materials Operations, and Firefighter 1 certification.

A big shout out to all their hard work and dedication. These new firefighters will be serving their local communities through their organizations, as well as providing assistance throughout the region as needed through several mutual/automatic aid agreements between the fire agencies. They have taken a major leap in helping make their communities safer for the citizens we serve.

During the fire academy graduation ceremony, several firefighters were recognized for the accomplishments.

Four members were recognized with the Bull Dog Award. This award recognized their hard work, leadership, dedication, and skills. Out of the four members receiving the Bull Dog Award, one was selected as the overall Bull Dog for Recruit Class 26-1

Bull Dog Award recipients:

Jason Baar- Clallam County Fire District #4
Susanna Sharp- Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue
Jake Felton- Clallam 2 Fire - Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue

Overall Bull Dog Award:

Cade Stevens- Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue

One recruit was selected by their peers to recognize their dedication and inspiration show throughout the fire academy. Not only did she inspire her fellow recruits, this year’s recipient also literally carried another person with her during the fire academy (that person is set for “graduation” in June)

Fire Academy Class 26-01 Most Inspirational Award went to:

Kayla Kohen

To all the family and friends who helped support the new firefighters through the last several months, a big thank you!

To all the instructors, staff, and fire agencies who made this local regional academy possible, thank you!

To the Washington State Regional Direct Delivery program and Chief Deputy State Fire Marshal Howard Scartozzi, thank you!

Finally, a huge shout out to Anaka Hughes who served as the Drill Master for Recruit Class 26-1. She not only worked her regular job as the Volunteer Training Coordinator for Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue, she spent many, many, many hours coordinating the fire academy and making sure it was as successful as it was.

Heads up, Port Angeles! 🚒🚓🚑

Local Fire, EMS, and Law Enforcement will be conducting a planned training exercise at Peninsula College today, March 30, from 6:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m.

You may see emergency vehicles, responders training on-site, realistic emergency scenarios, volunteer role players, and hear occasional loud noises.

This is only a training exercise — there is no active emergency or threat to the public. Please do not call 9-1-1 for information about the event.

These trainings help keep our first responders prepared and ready to serve the community when real emergencies happen.

If you’re in the area, please avoid the immediate training zone and follow any posted signs or directions from personnel on scene.

Thank you for your support!

Ever wonder what vehicles the Fire District operates?

Clallam 2 Fire-Rescue covers 85 square miles and has 4 strategically placed fire stations. Our crews respond to all types of emergencies which includes fires, medical calls, and technical rescues. In 2025 our personnel responded to 2,094 emergency calls for service.

In order to handle the various types of emergency calls, the fire district has structural fire engines, wildland fire engines, transport ambulances, water tenders, and specialty support vehicles. This allows our personnel to meet the needs of the community.

Structural Fire Engines- Carry larger pumps and water to fight structure fires, as well as carry vehicle extrication equipment and various other tools.

Wildland Fire Engines- Smaller, more maneuverable for narrow roads. Typically 4WD, small pumps and water to reduce weight and carry specialized wildland firefighting equipment.

Water Tenders- Carry larger supply of water to support both structural and wildland fire engines. Used to shuttle and pump water to remote fires with no access to fire hydrants.

Medic Units- Equipped with both Advanced and Basic Live Support supplies for treatment and transport of medical patients. Also carries some fire equipment for the crew.

Squad Vehicle- Carries the Fire District's rope rescue equipment as well as equipment for backcountry rescues such as wheeled litters.

UTV- Small vehicle that is capable of accessing hard to reach areas and transport patients to an awaiting ambulance, or bring in fire suppression tools to remote fires.

Here are some of the vehicles they use when responding to emergencies
