We veterans have a binding thread that only we can know and share. Knowledge that we were part of something larger than ourselves. In quiet solitude, there is a single thread that binds us. It is the knowledge of having done much more than most ever do, performed well, took great risks, relied on good people, and served a real purpose by being there. Our contributions have made an impact on the lives of so many.

It is said that security is like oxygen: when you have enough of it, you pay no attention to it. America’s service members have long provided the oxygen, the security that allows millions and millions of people, not just in America, but in so much of the world, to be safe, to raise their children, to dream their dreams, to live lives that are full, and to leave behind a better world.

Many of us did not all come home alive, many did not all come home whole, many are not yet home, and we continue to send many back into harm’s way. The enormity of our veterans’ sacrifice, and the sacrifice of their families, is beyond compare. Taking care of our veterans and their families is a sacred responsibility we must always uphold.

To my Brothers and Sisters, I say “Thank You”. Not only for what you have done, but for the rare privilege and distinct honor to be one of you.

Thank you for everything you’ve done for our country. You’re among the best our nation has to offer. God bless you and your families, and happy Veterans Day.

The US Marine Corps started as the Continental Marines on November 10, 1775. On that date, the Second Continental Congress decided that they needed 2 battalions of Marines to serve as landing forces with the Continental Navy during the American Revolutionary War (1775–1783).
After the war, the Continental Navy was dismantled, and consequently, the Marines as well. However, after increasing conflict with revolutionary France, the Marine Corps was formally re-established.

General John A. Lejeune, on November 1, 1921, issued Marine Corps Order No. 47, Series 1921, which provided a summary of the history, mission, and traditions of the Corps. He directed that the order be read to every command each subsequent year on November 10 in honor of the founding of the Marine Corps.
It was formalized in 1952 by Commandant General Lemuel C. Shepherd Jr., who directed the celebration of the Marine Corps Birthday be formalized throughout the Corps.

13 October 1775 resolution of the Continental Congress established what is now the United States Navy with “a swift sailing vessel, to carry ten carriage guns, and a proportionable number of swivels, with eighty men, be fitted, with all possible dispatch, for a cruise of three months….” After the American War of Independence, the U.S. Constitution empowered the new Congress “to provide and maintain a navy.” Acting on this authority, Congress established the Department of the Navy on 30 April 1798.

The Fourth of July has been a federal holiday in the United States since 1941, but the tradition of Independence Day celebrations goes back to the 18th century and the American Revolution. From 1776 to the present day, July 4th has been celebrated as the birth of American independence, with festivities ranging from fireworks, parades, and concerts to more casual family gatherings and barbecues.

With the turmoil occurring in our country, this 4th of July is also a time to stop and reflect on this wonderful country of ours from “sea to shining sea.” A time to remember the foundation that our country was built on. A time to remember the courage our founding fathers displayed. And a time to appreciate the wonderful gift of freedom that we all enjoy; a freedom that many around the world hunger for and for which they are willing to risk their lives to enjoy.

When the Declaration of Independence was signed 244 years ago, 56 patriots pledged their lives and their sacred honor to defend our inviolable rights to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. They left a legacy that lives on today through generations of Americans who have made that same pledge to boldly stand up against tyranny, oppression, and persecution. As you celebrate Independence Day, please remember the men and women and their families who serve our nation at home and abroad. Thank them for all they do to help keep America safe.

God bless you and your families, our great nation, and all who endeavor to defend it. Happy Fourth of July!

Saturday, June 14th, is the birthday of the U.S. Army. On 14 June 1775, Congress "Resolved, That six companies of expert riflemen, be immediately raised in Pennsylvania, two in Maryland, and two in Virginia… [and] as soon as completed, shall march and join the army near Boston, to be there employed as light infantry, under the command of the chief Officer in that army." Today, as the largest branch of the U.S. military, the proud men and women of the U.S. Army continue to provide peace and security for all of us.

Independence Day holds immense significance in the United States. In historical context:

On July 4, 1776, the Continental Congress adopted the Declaration of Independence, a revolutionary document drafted primarily by Thomas Jefferson. It boldly declared the thirteen American colonies’ separation from British rule. The famous opening lines read:

“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Independence Day marks the birth of the United States as an independent nation. The signing of the Declaration symbolized the colonies’ collective resolve to break free from British tyranny and establish a new government based on democratic principles.

The American Revolution, which began years before the Declaration, was a struggle for freedom, justice, and representation. Patriots fought valiantly against British forces, enduring hardships and sacrifices. The spirit of liberty and the desire for self-governance fueled their determination.

It commemorates the day when news of the Emancipation Proclamation finally reached enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, marking the end of slavery in the United States. Juneteenth is a time for reflection, celebration, and a renewed commitment to the ongoing fight for freedom, equality, and justice.

The struggle for equality is not the struggle of one day, one week, or one year. It is not the struggle of one judicial appointment or presidential term. It is the struggle of a lifetime, or maybe even many lifetimes, and each one of us in every generation must do our part.

Saturday is Armed Forces Day. We live for our families, but they live for their country; they fight for us even after we are mere strangers to them. They are selfless and the sole reason our country breathes in peace. Never shall we find so much honor as living among those who work all day and night, risking their lives for us so we can have a peaceful life.

We have only one life to live, but these men and women dedicate that also, taking the oath to protect all their motherland from harm. The Armed Forces are the sole guardians of our country.
