Snap, Crackle, and Pop! 🌲💥

Back again in Northern Virginia on some grinding work. This project has a high number of large diameter stumps. Although we have a large grinder, we still have to process the stumps into smaller pieces to feed into the machine. In the video I’m using the clearing shear on our Volvo 340 manufactured by rockland to split this large poplar stump. At the top it measured 3ft in diameter with 7ft worth of spread on the bottom. Don’t let the video fool you, it took about 5 minutes worth of prying to weaken it enough to get it to split in the video. She was definitely a tough one!

Grind Away!

We spent the beginning half of this week working on a grinding project in northern Virginia in Fall Church. Our crew was surprised that there were such large poplar trees located in the middle of the city. This five acre lot will take us a good little while to grind with the large stumps and tree tops being ground into mulch. The logs will be destined for a mill if they’re big enough and the rest is firewood.

In the video the grinder is chewing through busted up stumps. Got to love how the grinder sings when she munches through that tough wood! 🪵 🌲

Hey everyone thanks for being active on our page here over the past month. We really appreciate it!

Today I wanted to share the page for Massanutten Drone Services. Travis is a friend of mine who I met through the Virginia Falconers Association. Him and I have been on a couple hunts together and spent some time talking about our businesses. He is super friendly guy that would be willing to help anyone out.

Now for those of you who may be thinking “Why would I need a drone service?”. Well Travis comes in handy for landowners, sportsmen and farmers. He specializes in deer herd analysis along with deer recovery during hunting season. Another service is pet and farm animal recovery. If an animal get loose and can not be found, he might be able to help if the conditions are right.

All in all an interesting company to have as a contact because you may want to know more about the wildlife on your property, or may need some assistance in a hurry. Whatever the case, give their page a look. Thanks!

Tree delete activated! ❌🌲🌳

Behind the scenes!
For many of our projects people get to see the before and after. What they don’t see is all the in between from bidding projects to handling materials and inspections. Perhaps one of the most crucial components is the mobilization of our large machinery.

For example our horizontal grinder weighs in at 84,000lbs. An average car weighs 4,000lbs that means it would take 21 cars to equal the weight of that machine. That’s a lot! How do we move it? We are fortunate enough to use a local transport company called Shenandoah Valley Transport.

They move not only our grinder, but also our large 340 excavator, 145 excavator and our dozer. They’re a top notch company that I would highly recommend to anyone! Luke, Ian, and Levi know what they are doing.

Today they moved a couple of machines to Fairfax for me for a grinding job we are starting soon. Can’t thank them enough!

Today we were up in Basye, Va cutting hiking trails on a mountain property for the landowner. Definitely a good trial for the forestry Mulcher on the new machine. It done really good and we look forward to more mulching jobs for it!

The new skid loader has landed! Shout out to Todd at James River Equipment in Fishersville for hooking us up with our new 333P skid loader. This new machine has a ton of upgrades over the previous G series we had. This machine was ordered with the forestry package on it to accommodate the work we perform in the woods. Can’t wait to run the forestry Mulcher on it in the next couple days! We put it to work immediately grubbing a building lot behind a house and performing some storm clean up from yesterday in Grottoes. That big maple log was definitely a test on it to see how she will handle everything!

What a way to end the week! We got a call today to assist the Town of Dayton with an emergency water main repair. We arrived and began excavating only to uncover this fist sized hole in the side of an 8in main. Definitely a bad situation, but we prevailed and managed to get them back up and running. Not exactly the way we planned our Friday but that is how it goes in the utility industry. We always appreciate doing work for them, even though it was under less than favorable circumstances this time.

Boom! 🪨
Today the crew and I got to watch two shots get set off at the Frazier Quarry North location. Frazier Quarry is our stone supplier and we appreciate the relationship we have built with them. When they asked us if we would like to come watch them set off some shots, we were excited. Our salesmen there, Greg Zimmerman and Scott Liskey, always help out with questions and getting us the best bang for our buck. Thanks to them and everyone that keeps this operation going!

Finished up the week with some clearing and stacking for us to grind next week. The clearing shear on our Volvo 340 worked great to push over trees and process them in a quick manner so we can feed them into our grinder more efficiently.
