PORT ST. LUCIE — The Port St. Lucie City Council approved a plan Sunday to distribute funds from the City’s $24 million settlement with Waste Pro of Florida, directing the money back to eligible residential property owners.

The plan follows an analysis by City staff aimed at returning the settlement funds, including accrued interest, to residents affected by Waste Pro’s service issues and contract dispute with the City.

Under the approved allocation, approximately 57,242 properties that have maintained the same ownership since 2022 will receive a $364 credit on this year’s tax bill. The amount includes a $64 adjustment related to Consumer Price Index increases.

About 24,676 properties that changed ownership during the period will receive a $64 credit, as will 13,241 newly developed properties. City officials said ownership changes make it difficult to determine eligibility for additional reimbursement.

Residents who sold one home and purchased another within Port St. Lucie during the same timeframe may apply for the remaining $300 credit through a claims process expected to be established within the next 180 days.

The settlement stems from litigation filed by the City against Waste Pro in 2021 and expanded in 2022 over service performance concerns and the early termination of the company’s waste collection contract. The dispute was resolved in April when Waste Pro agreed to pay the City $24 million.
